About the Facility VA Caribbean Healthcare System, San Juan VAMC The VA Caribbean Healthcare System provides comprehensive healthcare services to eligible veterans across Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The San Juan VAMC serves as the main facility, offering a full range of medical, surgical, and specialty care services including open-heart surgery, interventional cardiology, and advanced cardiac care.

Perfusionist RESPONSIBILITIES (included but not limited to)- Operate and manage cardiopulmonary bypass equipment during open-heart surgical procedures, ensuring optimal patient hemodynamic stability and oxygenation
- Set up, calibrate, and maintain all perfusion equipment including the cardiac perfusion pump, heater-cooler units, Impella devices, intra-aortic balloon pumps, and EVH vein harvesting systems
- Monitor and adjust blood flow rates, gas exchange, anticoagulation levels, and patient temperature throughout cardiac surgical procedures
- Assist the surgical team with intraoperative autotransfusion, cell salvage, and blood product management
- Perform quality assurance checks on all perfusion equipment and maintain accurate procedure records
- Provide standby support for interventional cardiology cases as needed
Perfusionist REQUIREMENTS- Must hold current certification as a Certified Clinical Perfusionist (CCP) by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP)
- Must have a current and unrestricted license in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia
- Must have current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification by the American Heart Association
- Proficiency with cardiac perfusion pump, heater-cooler, Impella, intra-aortic balloon pump, and EVH vein harvesting pump
- Graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited perfusion program
- Bilingual in Spanish and English
