Perfusionist

We are seeking an experienced Board-Certified Perfusionist to provide comprehensive onsite perfusion and autotransfusion services for our nation's Veterans through a VA Medical Center contract at the Richmond VA Healthcare System in Richmond, Virginia.

This is a full-time, 100% onsite position supporting Cardio-Thoracic surgical services, including cardiopulmonary bypass procedures, valve replacements, ECMO-related support, autotransfusion, and other advanced perfusion services.

Position Details

• Location: Richmond VA Healthcare System - 1201 Broad Rock Blvd, Richmond, VA 23249
• Work Setting: 100% Onsite
• Schedule: Full-Time, Monday-Friday
• Regular Hours: 8:00 am - 4:30 pm
• Pay: $75-85/hr
• Call: Required - Weeknights, Weekends & Federal Holidays
• On-Call Proximity: Must remain within 30 minutes of the facility while on call
• Direct Patient Care: Approximately 90%
• Administrative Responsibilities: Approximately 10%

  Base period of performance: September 30, 2026 through September 29, 2027.

  Clinical Responsibilities

  The Perfusionist will provide comprehensive perfusion and autotransfusion services within their scope of practice and VA-granted clinical privileges.

• Support the Cardio-Thoracic surgical service during cardiopulmonary bypass procedures and valve replacements.
• Prepare and operate heart-lung machines and associated perfusion equipment.
• Provide autotransfusion and cell-saver services.
• Prepare, operate, and maintain VA-owned heart-lung machines, autotransfusion pumps, intra-aortic balloon pumps, and centrifugal ventricular assist devices.
• Provide perfusion support involving left and right heart bypass.
• Provide membrane oxygenation/ECMO-related support.
• Support ICU patients requiring intra-aortic balloon pump and ECMO support.
• Assemble equipment and supplies necessary to rapidly place a patient on extracorporeal circulation in the event of premature cardiac arrest or cardiac failure.
• Maintain adequate patient blood volume and take appropriate measures to prevent shock and air emboli.
• Maintain an appropriate sterile environment during procedures.
• Perform and verify calculations required for perfusion, autotransfusion, and cell-saver treatments.
• Review the patient's VA electronic health record before surgery to understand the surgeon's planned course of care.
• Complete required treatment records, procedure notes, transfusion documentation, QA/QI documentation, and timesheets.
• Participate in quality-improvement activities and staff meetings as required.
• Follow applicable patient-safety and infection-control requirements.

  Required Clinical Experience

  Candidates must demonstrate hands-on experience in the following areas:

• Open-heart surgery
• Autotransfusion
• Heart-lung machine operation
• Membrane oxygenation / ECMO-related support
• Left and right heart bypass
• Intra-aortic balloon pumping (IABP)
• Centrifugal ventricular assist devices (VAD)

  Candidates should be prepared to discuss their recent experience and case volume involving these procedures.

  On-Call Responsibilities

  This position includes required on-call coverage in addition to the regular Monday-Friday daytime schedule.

• Weekdays: On-call/standby from 4:30 p.m.-8:00 a.m.
• Weekends: 24-hour on-call coverage.
• Federal Holidays: 24-hour on-call coverage.
• The Perfusionist must remain within 30 minutes of the Richmond VA Healthcare System while on call to respond to emergent cases.
• The Perfusionist may be required to return to the facility for emergency procedures during on-call periods.

  The VA PWS requires one full-time Perfusionist to maintain on-call status 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, including Federal holidays.

  Required Qualifications

• Board Certified by the American Board of Cardiovascular Perfusion (ABCP).
• Minimum of two years of experience as a Certified Perfusionist.
• Graduate of an accredited Allied Health Education Program School of Perfusion Technology.
• Minimum of 200 completed clinical cases.
• Current, full, unrestricted and unencumbered license applicable to the services from a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
• U.S. citizenship required.
• Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Current American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
• Maintain ABCP certification and applicable continuing-education requirements.
• Ability to speak, understand, read, and write English fluently.
• Possess or obtain an appropriate National Provider Identifier (NPI).
• Successfully complete applicable VA credentialing and privileging requirements before beginning patient-care services.
• Successfully complete required VA background/security requirements and obtain necessary PIV/access credentials.
• Complete applicable VA mandatory training.

  The candidate's licensure, credentials, training, competencies, and background investigation must be validated before the individual can provide direct patient care.

  Administrative & Compliance Responsibilities

  Approximately 10% of the position is designated for administrative responsibilities, which may include:

• Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement activities.
• Clinical and procedure documentation.
• Electronic health record documentation.
• Staff and quality-improvement meetings.
• Continuing education and competency requirements.
• Required VA training.
• Compliance with VA patient safety, infection control, privacy, and security requirements.

The Perfusionist must maintain applicable certification, licensure, continuing education, credentialing, and VA access requirements throughout the assignment.
