Purpose of Announcement

EXAMINATION IS ANNOUNCED TO ESTABLISH AN EMPLOYMENT LIST TO FILL ONE (1) CURRENT EAST JEFFERSON VACANCY IN THE DEPARTMENT OF BUILDING PERMITS.

This employment list will also be used for future EAST AND WEST Jefferson vacancies in this Department as they occur.

Kind of Work

The purpose of this position is to assist the public by receiving documents submitted and reviews documents for accuracy, compliance with applicable building codes and amendments to the building codes, zoning ordinance and other Building Permit procedures and regulations. Monitors building applications for accuracy, completeness and for required information and documentation. Consults with Building Plan Reviewers on requirements for permit issuance and screening. Answers questions and provides information to the general public and applicants regarding Building Permits and procedures for issuance of a building permit. Inputs/Uploads initial building and property information into the permitting system necessary for the Building Plan Reviewers to review a building permit. Issues minor building permits that do not require a Building Code plan review; such minor building permits defined as for work to include interior renovations, non-structural work, accessory buildings, and fences. Composes, types letters, memos, correspondence, and statistical data as it relates to issuing of permits and types of permits. Acts as liaison between the general public and the Building Plan Reviewer. Reviews submitted documentation for accuracy and compliance with applicable Department of Building Permits procedures and regulations as it relates to issuing permits.

Minimum Qualifications For Admission to Examination

Meets ONE of the following three options:

I. Current employment and permanent civil service status with Jefferson Parish in a class performing clerical or administrative work at or above the level of Office Support Specialist II and at least one (1) year of experience in this capacity within the J.P. Department of Building Permits.

OR

II. Completion of high school (or possession of an equivalent certificate); plus, at least six months of paid work experience as a residential general contractor, building construction superintendent, architectural designer/draftsperson, technical inspector, and/or reviewer of residential or commercial construction plans.

OR

III. Successful completion of at least nine (9) credit hours of college coursework in (or closely related to) Civil Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, Architectural Drawing/Drafting/Design, and/or Construction/Engineering Technology at an accredited college or university.

Kind of Examination

(ENTRANCE AND PROMOTIONAL)

The examination may consist of a written test, a rating of training and experience, an oral panel interview or any combination thereof. Acceptable applicants will be notified of the time, date, and place of any assembled testing. Applicants must supply complete and accurate information concerning their training and experience including a detailed description of their work experience, the names and addresses of all previous employers and the dates of employment. The information is subject to verification and the Personnel Department reserves the right to determine the quality and quantity of education and experience claimed for credit.

Vacation (Annual Leave)

Employees accumulate one half day of paid vacation for every two weeks worked.

Leave accrual rates increase with years of service. Any unused annual leave is

usually paid upon separation from Parish Employment.

Sick Leave

Employees accumulate one half day of paid sick leave for every two weeks worked.

Sick leave is available for personal illness, injury or medical consultations.

Holidays

Nine paid official holidays are observed, plus any holidays declared by Parish Officials.

Life Insurance

All regular employees receive a life insurance policy equal to one years salary.

Extra insurance may be purchased.

Medical Insurance

An HMO medical insurance plan is avalable for employees and their

dependents. Jefferson Parish pays 80% of the premium for employees and 50% of

the premiums for dependents.

A Flexible Benefits Plan

Employees have the opportunity to save money by paying for health

insurance and optional insurance with pre-tax dollars. A Flexible Savings

Account for Medical Expenses and Dependent Care is also available.

Retirement

Most regular employees belong to the Parochial Employees Retirement

System instead of the Social Security System. For employees hired after

January 01, 2007, a pension calculated at 3% of salary per year of service

is provided upon retirement at age 67 with 7 years of service, age 62 with

10 years of service, or age 55 with 30 years of service.

Tenure Payment

Employees are paid $25 per year of service in December of each year.

Employees must have worked two years before the first check is paid.

Deferred Compensation Plan(457b plan)

Similar to 401K programs, the 457b Deferred Plan allows employees to defer

up to $14,000 of pretax income each year to supplement retirement savings.

Pre-tax contributions can be cashed in upon retirement or termination without

penalty. This plan is provided by Nationwide Retirement Solutions 1-877-677-3678.
