Provo City is looking for a Permit Technician to provide technical permit issuance and basic plan checking work in the Building Inspection division. Civic-minded individuals interested in supporting these services provided to the residents of Provo City are strongly encouraged to apply.

What is the compensation package?
Pay Rate: (G23) $21.99 - $30.32 per hour (depending on qualifications)

What are the main duties?(Click here to view the full classification specification)

  • Assist homeowners, contractors, developers, design professionals, and the public with general building permit application requirements, building permit processes, inspection procedures, and related Building Division information.

  • Explain and apply established building permit procedures, fee schedules, adopted policies, and general code-related requirements; refer technical code interpretations to appropriate review staff, inspectors, plans examiners, Assistant Building Official, or the Building Official.

  • Respond to telephone, e-mail, and in-person inquiries regarding building permit applications, building permit status, inspection scheduling, records and general Building Division process; route inquiries to the appropriate City Department or staff member when needed.

  • Support timely permit intake and routing consistent with established review timelines.

  • Review permit applications and supporting documents for completeness, required information, and basic administrative compliance prior to routing for technical review.

  • Communicate missing application information to applicants clearly and professionally.

  • Operate a personal computer, Microsoft Office software (Word, Outlook, Excel),  and learn new computer programs (CityView and other city software

  • Coordinate building permit application routing with Planning Engineering, Fire, Public Works, Power, and other reviewing departments as applicable.

  • Maintain accurate permit records in electronic permitting software, including application entry, document uploads, workflow routing, status updates, and communication notes.

  • Research and compile building permit, fee, inspection records, and project information; prepare basic reports, spreadsheets, correspondence, and documentation as assigned.

  • Perform historical building permit and property record research, including approved plans, building permits, payments, Certificates of Occupancy, contractor affidavits, and inspection records.

  • Receive inspection requests, assist customers with inspection scheduling procedures, schedule inspections in City software, and maintain related inspection records.

  • Calculate building permit-related fees, prepare outstanding fee summaries, process payments, issue receipts, and coordinate deposits or financial documentation consistent with City procedures.

  • Maintain building permit-related financial records, reports and transaction documentation; coordinate building permit-related financial questions, refunds, payments and reconciliations with the Finance Department.

  • Perform and assist with other duties as required by Division or Department needs.

What are the requirements to apply?

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).

  • One (1)year of permit processing or licensing experience which included regular public contact, preferably in a technical City function.

  • A valid, lawful Driver License.

  • One (1) years of experience in office administration customer service or related duties above is preferred.

  • Basic knowledge of modern office practices and procedures; of grammar, spelling, and punctuation; telephone etiquette; and various office machines preferred.

  • Experience with local government practices is preferred.

  • Licensed in the State of Utah as a Notary Public preferred.

What is the selection process?

Applications will be reviewed in the order they are submitted, with the first screening being held on July 20, 2026. Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications listed above to be eligible for consideration.

If selected for hire, candidate will be required to successfully pass a drug screen and criminal background check. Non-disclosure may result in dismissal. Applicants with unsatisfactory drug screen results will be ineligible for appointment or application to any Provo City position for a minimum period of six (6) months.
