Job Duties
The Office of Family Health Services at the Virginia Department of Health is looking for an experienced Registered Newborn Screening Public Health Nurse who would serve as a subject-matter expert for the Virginia Newborn Bloodspot Screening Program (VNBSP), a statewide, mandated program.
This position uses clinical knowledge and judgment to provide screening result reporting, care coordination, and case management within the scope of nursing practice. The position assists in the development of VNBSP goals, objectives, policies, and procedures; contributes to reports on program performance; serves as a point of contact for staff and external inquiries about VNBSP; monitors VNBSP delivery for compliance with applicable policies and procedures; and promotes VNBSP to improve performance and enhance public awareness. Works to ensure that newborn screening dried bloodspot (NBS-DBS) required screening tests are performed and followed up, including on-call weekend and holiday coverage for critical reports. Works with information technology staff to maintain the VNBSP database. Provides training and consultation assistance to stakeholders as needed.
Prepares and presents statistical reports, as needed.
This position requires rotating on-call coverage for weekends and holidays. Travel may be required.
Minimum Qualifications
• RN licensure valid in Commonwealth of Virginia.
• Communicates verbally and in writing, to analyze problems, situations and suggest solutions, leadership, follow directions and establish priorities
• Skills in physical examination, health assessment, and interviewing and counseling technique
• Ability to function independently, prioritize and organize work, solve problems, adapt to change, function as a team member and relate to the public
• Knowledge of public health concepts, principles of public health nursing, principles of epidemiology; immunizations; basic nursing science, medical terminology, case management
• Experience in maternal and infant health, neonatal, or pediatric healthcare settings
• May travel and some weekend and/or evening hours may be required
• Must be certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR
Additional Considerations
• Additional study in health promotion/or public health is preferred
• Experience in a public health setting or one related to disease prevention and health promotion
