Under the general supervision of the Director of Pharmacy, the Inpatient Pharmacist is responsible for the accurate compounding, dispensing, and management of medications prescribed by licensed practitioners. This role supports the daily operations of the Pharmacy Department, ensures compliance with regulatory standards, and collaborates with healthcare professionals to provide safe and effective patient care. The pharmacist also supervises pharmacy support personnel and contributes to departmental quality improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Review, verify, and prioritize medication orders using the Epic electronic health record system to ensure appropriate dosing, frequency, administration schedules, and patient safety.
Evaluate medication orders for allergies, drug interactions, contraindications, and therapeutic appropriateness while supporting the hospital formulary.
Accurately prepare and dispense medications in accordance with pharmacy policies, labeling requirements, and barcode scanning procedures.
Maintain compliance with current USP <797> and USP <800> standards for sterile and hazardous drug compounding.
Utilize pharmacy technology and software systems, including Abacus software and Baxa pumps, as applicable.
Coordinate and oversee workflow within assigned pharmacy areas, effectively directing support staff to ensure uninterrupted patient care services.
Monitor medication inventory levels, initiate replenishment orders, and remove expired or outdated medications from stock.
Maintain pharmacy records and documentation in compliance with state, federal, and departmental regulations governing controlled substances, investigational drugs, and other pharmaceuticals.
Adhere to hospital and departmental safety policies and procedures.
Promote a positive and professional image of The Christ Hospital in all interactions with patients, visitors, physicians, and fellow staff members.
Participate in interdisciplinary problem-solving, process improvement, and quality assurance initiatives.
Required Qualifications
Education
Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (BSPharm) or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from an accredited program.
Licensure
Licensed Pharmacist in the State of Ohio or eligible for Ohio pharmacist licensure.
Experience & Skills
Demonstrated clinical and operational pharmacy practice skills.
Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication abilities.
Ability to effectively prioritize tasks and work in a fast-paced inpatient hospital environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience
One to two (1-2) years of hospital pharmacy experience.
