Job Title: Pharmacist

Job Description

This role oversees day-to-day pharmacy operations in a closed-door long-term care setting, ensuring safe, accurate, and timely medication preparation and delivery for nursing homes and assisted living facilities. The pharmacist manages medication order processing, supervises pharmacy staff and workflow, maintains regulatory compliance, and supports high-quality patient care through precise documentation, communication, and professional collaboration.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily pharmacy operations to ensure safe, accurate, and timely medication dispensing and delivery for long-term care facilities.
  • Prepare and maintain pharmacy systems to support efficient order processing and workflow.
  • Receive, review, and process new medication orders and refill requests with a high level of accuracy.
  • Ensure proper documentation and handling of narcotics and other controlled substances in compliance with DEA regulations.
  • Verify and check the work of pharmacy technicians, including data entry, filling, and packaging of medications.
  • Answer incoming calls from nursing homes, assisted living facilities, staff, and families, providing clear drug information and resolving issues promptly.
  • Communicate effectively with nursing homes and assisted living facilities to clarify orders, address concerns, and support continuity of care.
  • Assist pharmacy technicians in managing workload and maintaining an efficient and organized workflow.
  • Maintain accurate records of medication orders, controlled substance logs, invoices, and other required documentation.
  • Oversee timely and correct medication dispensing, packaging, and delivery to all supported facilities.
  • Supervise pharmacy staff, providing guidance, leadership, and support to ensure high standards of performance and professionalism.
  • Manage inventory levels and supplies, ensuring adequate stock of medications and pharmacy materials while minimizing waste.
  • Support billing processes and participate in special projects as needed to improve pharmacy services and operations.
  • Ensure proper maintenance and functioning of pharmacy equipment and systems.
  • Enforce standards of cleanliness, organization, and professionalism within the pharmacy.
  • Perform end-of-day readiness tasks, ensuring the pharmacy is prepared for the next day's operations and that all records and systems are up to date.

Essential Skills

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or Bachelor's degree in Pharmacology or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of relevant pharmacy experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory abilities in a pharmacy setting.
  • Strong knowledge of pharmacy operations, including medication dispensing, order processing, and inventory management.
  • Proficiency in pharmacy practice, including data entry and pharmaceutical calculations.
  • Ability to verify and oversee the work of pharmacy technicians to ensure accuracy and safety.
  • Thorough understanding of DEA regulations and best practices for handling controlled substances.
  • Strong attention to detail with a focus on accuracy and minimizing medication errors.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with healthcare staff, patients' families, and colleagues.
  • Capability to manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Comfort using pharmacy management software and computer-based systems.

Work Environment

This position is based in a closed-door long-term care pharmacy that supports multiple nursing homes and assisted living facilities. The pharmacy operates with a small, collaborative team consisting of approximately six pharmacy technicians, one other pharmacist, and a pharmacist-in-charge. The work schedule is Monday through Friday from 1:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., providing consistent evening hours. The environment emphasizes accuracy, efficiency, and teamwork, with extensive use of pharmacy management software and computer-based systems to manage orders, documentation, and inventory. Staff work in a professional, organized setting focused on safe medication handling, regulatory compliance, and reliable service to long-term care residents.

This is a Contract position based out of San Antonio, TX.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $64.00 - $67.00/hr.
