Overview

Job Summary

A clinical specialist is able to perform all tasks of a clinical pharmacy (see Job Code 4473) and clinical pharmacy specialist (see Job Code 5918), Additionally, pharmacists in the Pharmacy Specialty job code are responsible for developing a practice in their area of specialty, including a strong relationship with the associated nursing unit(s)/department(s). Specialty pharmaists are expected to identify, implement, and monitor projects and programs proactively; participate in the hospitals MUE program; precept residents and students; and otherwise further the hospitals mission of serving its patients and becoming nationally recognized for clinical and service excellence. Requirements include a Doctor of Pharmacy degree and residency training (or demonstrated equivalent clinical experience). Excellent communication, organization, self-direction, and prioritization skills are required.

Qualifications

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Experience required:

Education:

Doctor of Pharmacy degree from an accredited university with license to practice pharmacy in Alabama required. PGY-1 residency or equivalent clinical experience required; PGY-2 residency in related clinical area or equivalent clinical experience required.

Experience

Prior experience preferred.

Additional Skills/Abilities

Must have excellent communication skills with the ability to work in a fast paced environment, requiring prioritizing and changing tasks frequently and quickly. Must be proficient in mathematics. BCLS is required prior to the end of the orientation period and must be maintained as current. Obtains and maintains Board Certification in appropriate pharmacy specialty area, if applicable (e.g., an oncology specialist would maintain board certification in oncology (BCOP).
