    Department Overview:

    The Pharmacy Centralized Trainer is responsible for participation, coordination, monitoring, and execution of the Pharmacy Centralized Training Program.

     

    The primary purpose of this position is to develop and facilitate the training for pharmacy students, pharmacy technicians, pharmacists (including residents), and as needed, other healthcare personnel engaged in medication management. Training includes shoulder-to-shoulder training, compounding competencies and septic technique assessments, as well as the management of training related competencies and records and ngoing monitoring and evaluation of the effectiveness of training processes. Pharmacy Centralized Trainers must also drive training program improvement through the development, review, and updating/maintenance of training documents and methods. Trainers must be able to deliver oral and written recommendations to Operational Leaders regarding training or operational changes. Training areas may include any of the pharmacy service departments or OHSU areas where medications are handled by nonpharmacy workforce members.

     

    Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: training members of the pharmacy workforce either while staffing a pharmacy shift or while serving purely as a trainer; identifying, cataloging/organizing, updating, and maintaining training documents/checklists/policies; developing training schedules; collaborating with pharmacy operational and clinical leadership; assessing training quality; training process improvements. Trainers may also be required to staff in pharmacy shifts while not training as needed to maintain competence in specific areas.

     

    Beyond training, centralized trainers will maintain practice standards and support controlled substance diversion detection, customer service, compliance with accreditation standards and applicable laws and regulations in coordination with all pharmacy service lines and other hospital departments that have medication management. This work will require direct communication and collaboration with the Pharmacy Compliance team.  

    Function/Duties of Position:
    • Serve as a trainer for pharmacy workforce and other OHSU workforce members engaged in Medication Management activities. Training activities include but are not limited to:
      • Shoulder to shoulder training in assigned pharmacy technician shifts/duties/roles
      • Facilitation of aseptic technique assessment, compounding competencies, and environmental monitoring in accordance with USP <797> and USP <800>
      • Training and assessment of staff in accordance with USP <795>
      • Routine revalidation of staff competency 
    • Organize, update, and maintain training documents including, but not limited to, policies, procedures, checklists, and job aids 
    • Be trained-in and staff pharmacy technician shifts to maintain competency in areas as needed 
    • Document training completion statuses in various software including but not limited to Simplifi797, Compass, OnBase, and Smartsheet's. 
    • Collaborate with Pharmacy Compliance to evaluate/report out on training and documentation compliance rates, investigate controlled substance discrepancy/diversion events
    Required Qualifications:
    • Five years of experience with responsibility for program or project monitoring and coordination.  The experience must have included program evaluation responsibility. 

    • A bachelor’s degree in business administration, Management, Public Administration, or a field directly related to the position will substitute for two years of the required experience.

    • Note: preference may be given to individuals with experience in a specialty area specific to the position opening.

    • Skill at manipulating small objects, e.g., needles, syringes, ampules.
    • Ability to use mechanical system for transfer of fluids.
    • Knowledge of and skill at application of aseptic technique.
    • Ability to establish priorities in workflow.
    • Ability to work under supervision of diverse Pharmacist
    • Ability to work and collaborate with a diverse group of individuals
    • Ability to resolve interpersonal conflict 
    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Oregon State Board of Pharmacy Technician license
    • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board Certifications including PTCB CPhT; PTCB CSPT; PTCB CPhT-Adv; PTCB CPTEd
    • Pharmacy Technician Certification Board Certificates including Controlled Substance Diversion Prevention, Hazardous Drug Management, Nonsterile Compounding, or Regulatory Compliance 
    • Inpatient, infusion, and/or outpatient pharmacy experience; experience developing schedules; demonstrated experience in training and competency management
    Additional Details:

    Work Schedule: Sunday through Saturday, variable hours.

    Work Location: hybrid; in-person training may be assigned at any of OHSU’s pharmacy or medication management locations (including clinics in the states of Oregon or Washington)

    Potential exposure to hazardous chemicals or medications

    Work will require ability to work under direction of multiple pharmacists at various times.
