Description:

The Pharmacy Informaticist is responsible for optimizing medication-use systems and technology to ensure safe, effective, and efficient pharmaceutical care for pediatric patients. This role serves as the liaison between the Department of Pharmacy, clinical teams, and Information Technology to enhance electronic health record (EHR) functionality, clinical decision support, medication safety systems, and data analytics specific to pediatric populations.

The Pharmacy Informaticist plays a critical role in supporting weight-based dosing, neonatal and pediatric medication safety, formulary management, and regulatory compliance within a children’s hospital environment.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Systems & EHR Optimization

  • Lead pharmacy-related build and maintenance within EHR systems (e.g., Epic, Cerner).

  • Design, validate, and maintain pediatric-specific order sets, dosing calculators, smart infusion pump libraries, and medication administration workflows.

  • Configure and optimize barcode medication administration (BCMA) systems to improve safety and compliance.

  • Collaborate on CPOE enhancements to reduce prescribing errors in neonatal and pediatric populations.

Pediatric Medication Safety

  • Develop and maintain weight-based and age-specific dosing safeguards.

  • Optimize clinical decision support alerts to minimize alert fatigue while improving patient safety.

  • Partner with medication safety committees to analyze adverse drug events and implement system-based improvements.

  • Support antimicrobial stewardship and high-risk medication monitoring programs.

Automation & Technology Integration

  • Oversee pharmacy automation systems (e.g., automated dispensing cabinets, carousel systems).

  • Collaborate on integration of smart infusion pumps and pharmacy compounding technologies.

  • Ensure accurate interoperability between pharmacy systems, EHR, and external data sources using standards such as HL7 and FHIR.

Data Analytics & Reporting

  • Develop dashboards and reports to monitor medication utilization, safety metrics, and operational performance.

  • Support regulatory reporting and accreditation requirements (e.g., The Joint Commission).

  • Analyze trends in medication errors, override rates, dosing variances, and formulary compliance.

Workflow Optimization & Process Improvement

  • Conduct workflow analyses across inpatient, NICU, PICU, oncology, and ambulatory pharmacy services.

  • Lead and support system upgrades, new module implementations, and go-live activities.

  • Apply quality improvement methodologies to enhance medication-use processes.

Education & Change Management

  • Provide training to pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and prescribers on system enhancements.

  • Serve as pharmacy subject matter expert during EHR upgrades and vendor implementations.

  • Develop standard operating procedures related to medication-use technology.

Required:

  • Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) from an accredited institution, licensed in Virginia.
  • Active pharmacist licensure.
  • 5 years plus of pediatric or hospital pharmacy experience.
  • Experience with EHR systems and clinical decision support tools.
  • Strong knowledge of pediatric pharmacotherapy, including neonatal and weight-based dosing.
  • Strong background supporting informatics.

Preferred:
