Location: Fairview Southdale Hospital, Edina MN
Hours: Casual hours bi-weekly
Schedule: day/evening, one weekend per month
Provide clinical care to patients of the pharmacy. Assist the pharmacy manager in the operation and management of the pharmacy. Support pharmacists, provide indirect supervision for support staff, and ensure adherence to all policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
- Provide patient counseling and prospective drug use evaluation.
- Perform patient evaluations related to prescribed therapies; collect, analyze, and interpret data.
- Monitor patient records for allergies, drug interactions, and therapy appropriateness.
- Dispense medications accurately and in compliance with legal, regulatory, and organizational requirements.
- Identify and resolve patient-specific medication-related problems.
- Support medication safety and error management activities.
- Ensure accurate and complete billing to payers.
- Utilize pharmacy technologies to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
- Participate in team meetings and interdisciplinary discussions.
- Maintain proficiency in pharmacy practice through ongoing education.
- Demonstrate cultural competence and developmental sensitivity in patient care.
- Retail Pharmacy Responsibilities: Insurance verification, prior authorizations, and third-party prescription issues. Process manual prescriptions (EZ-DME, Worker’s Compensation, breast pumps). Handle cash register transactions and customer service. Support scheduling, pharmacy software, and bookkeeping activities. Progression of Duties: Student pharmacists advance from operational support in Year 1, to clinical responsibilities and immunization responsibilities in Year 2, expanded clinical care with supervisory duties in Year 3, and full clinical integration with interdisciplinary collaboration, cultural competence, and mentoring in Year 4.
- Hospital Pharmacy Responsibilities: Deliver medications and supplies to patient care areas. Support inpatient workflows, including sterile compounding. Participate in multidisciplinary care discussions with clinical teams. Greater emphasis on infusion therapies and direct patient monitoring. Progression of Duties: Student pharmacists in the hospital setting advance from immediate clinical care in Year 1, to deeper responsibilities in therapy modification and interdisciplinary collaboration in Year 2, expanded integration with counseling, medication safety, and cultural competence in Year 3, and full clinical integration with personalized medicine, advanced collaboration, and culturally responsive care in Year 4.
Required Qualifications
- Enrolled as a student at an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy
- Year-specific progression: Year 2: Completion of Year 1 pharmacy school required. Year 3: Completion of Year 2 pharmacy school required. Year 4: Completion of Year 3 pharmacy school required.
- Excellent customer service skills, proficiency in English, problem-solving ability, adherence to policies and procedures, and competent mathematical skills
- Active registration as a Pharmacy Intern with the MN State Board of Pharmacy Upon Hire
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous pharmacy experience (retail/hospital/infusion therapies)
