Pharmacy Manager 

 

Under general direction of the Director of Pharmacy, the Pharmacy Manager is responsible for planning, executing, managing, and evaluating the day to day operations of the pharmacy to ensure distributive services are provided according to policies and procedures to throughout the hospital with particular focus in controlled substance oversight, sterile compounding services, medication chain of custody, and optimization of available pharmacy technology to harness opportunities to create a dynamic and efficient pharmacy practice model.

 

Responsibilities:

Management of Pharmacy Operations

  • Supervise pharmacy staff and manage day to day workflows of pharmacy operations
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory agency standards and laws including but not limited to:  United States Pharmacopeia (USP), The Joint Commission (TJC), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH), Food and Drug Administration (FDA)
  • Handles unusual problems to resolution; maintains operational records and statistics; monitors and/or prepares compounding and dispensing of medications and controlled drugs.
  • Investigate and resolve controlled substance discrepancies
  • Plan and coordinate the distribution of scheduled medications to various nursing stations throughout the hospital
  • Collaborate with Department workforce and when necessary, interdisciplinary leadership to achieve compliance with controlled substance regulations
  • Develop, implement and ensure pharmacy operation policies and practices designed to meet regulatory compliance
  • Develop plans of action for noncompliance
  • Oversee review and training of Department workforce of policies and procedures.
  • Compose and implement reporting of key performance metrics for systems/workflow and identify improvement opportunities
  • Plan and execute pharmacy workforce schedule  
  • Evaluates equipment and recommends maintenance, repair, upgrade or replacement participates in the planning and utilization of space
  • Supervise and assess staff compounding practices to ensure adherence to department policies and procedures
  • Ensure proper handling of hazardous drugs and hazardous sterile compounding
  • Ensures an adequate inventory of pharmacy products and supplies to meet department
  • Contribute to Department strategic planning to improve pharmacy operation efficiency and safety
  • Participate in strategic initiatives and projects as appropriate
  • Serve as pharmacy preceptor when assigned
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary departments as necessary
  • Participate in professional activities such as but not limited to professional conferences, academic & scholarly activities
  • Assist with medication therapy, including review and procurement of all inpatient medication orders to ensure they conform to approved policies and are appropriate for the patient when necessary.

Ensure Timely Provision of Pharmacy Services

  • Work independently with minimal supervision; effectively organize and prioritize work assignments
  • Ensure that pharmacy services are provided in a timely manner

 

Supervisory and Leadership

  • Supervise and check the work of pharmacy support personnel, as needed
  • Serve as manager on-call during off-hours
  • Provide leadership and direction in accordance with departmental goals and policies
  • Support administrative decisions and changes within the department
  • Act as a resource to pharmacy staff, professional staff, and patients
  • Serve as preceptor for pharmacy students and residents
  • Participate in staff meetings and staff huddles

Requirements:

Education:

  • Graduate of an ACPE-accredited School of Pharmacy with a BS in Pharmacy, an MS in Pharmacy or a Doctor of Pharmacy.
  • NYS Pharmacy license required.
  • Completion of a PGY-2 in Administration, or similar residency/training preferred.

  

Skills:

  • Basic and advanced computer skills; proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Outstanding organization and prioritization skills
  • Effective communicator
  • Knowledge and background in the interpretation and execution of federal and state pharmacy regulations in controlled substance handling & record keeping
  • Knowledge and background in pharmacy regulatory and quality requirements
  • Knowledge in regulations & implementation of USP797, USP800, USP795 regulations
  • Able to maintain integrity, concentration, organization, and accuracy in a busy environment
  • Able to work collaboratively on a multidisciplinary team

Experience:    

 

  • Minimum of three years of hospital pharmacy experience required
  • Previous hospital pharmacy management experience in maintenance of sterile compounding suite, strongly preferred  
  • Previous hospital pharmacy management experience in controlled substance handling and chain of custody, strongly preferred
  • Obtain ASHP Compounded Sterile Preparations Certificate or equivalent certificate, board certification applicable for designated personnel per USP sterile compounding within 1 month of hire, required.

 

Posted Salary Range: USD $131,000.00 - USD $186,069.00 /Yr. :

This range serves as a good faith estimate and actual pay will encompass a number of factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies and experience. The salary range or rate listed does not include any bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation that may be applicable to this job and it does not include the value of benefits.
