Job Title: Pharmacy Porter
Job Description
The Pharmacy Porter plays a key role in ensuring the safe, timely, and efficient transport of medicines, fluids, enteral feeds, and related pharmacy stock between the pharmacy and wards or departments. This position supports the smooth operation of pharmacy distribution services by maintaining accurate documentation, following established procedures, and upholding high standards of safety and compliance at all times.
Responsibilities
- Undertake all general duties required by the Distribution and Dispensaries Supervisors and the Services Manager to support the effective running of pharmacy services.
- Demonstrate flexibility in work patterns to maintain a high level of operational efficiency across the pharmacy distribution service.
- Complete all mandatory and essential training within required timeframes and participate in any additional training as requested.
- Comply at all times with Trust policies, procedures, and standard operating procedures when handling, transporting, and documenting pharmacy stock.
- Assist pharmacy storekeepers with their duties when required, including handling, organising, and moving pharmacy stock.
- Notify pharmacy technicians or managers promptly of any supply deficiencies, discrepancies, or issues identified during transport or delivery.
- Collect red waste bin contents from wards across the site in accordance with the designated rota and follow relevant waste handling procedures.
- Liaise with distribution leads to resolve ward-level issues related to deliveries or collections and ensure effective communication across teams.
- Follow manual handling training and guidance at all times to move stock safely and prevent injury or damage.
- Maintain the cold chain for refrigerated medicines and items as required, ensuring that temperature-sensitive products remain within specified conditions during transport.
- Transport medicines, fluids, and enteral feeds daily to and from wards and departments within the hospital precinct using appropriate equipment such as push trolleys.
- Adhere strictly to the Trust's manual handling policy when moving all items, including heavy or bulky stock.
- Visit all wards and departments according to the agreed rota to ensure regular and reliable delivery and collection of pharmacy stock.
- Ensure all fluids and stock are transported safely and delivered in a timely manner to support continuity of patient care.
- Visit all wards and departments at least three times per day to collect and deliver pharmacy stock in line with established procedures.
- Complete all urgent deliveries within 30 minutes of the request whenever possible, prioritising tasks to meet clinical needs.
- Ensure all medications are delivered promptly and safely, maintaining the integrity and security of items in transit.
- Escalate and communicate any delivery issues, delays, or obstacles to the supervisory team so that appropriate action can be taken.
- Transport and deliver controlled drugs to wards and departments safely and in a timely manner, following all relevant procedures and security requirements.
- Accurately record all controlled drug deliveries in the required documentation to maintain clear and auditable records.
- Obtain and maintain all required delivery signatures for controlled drugs and other pharmacy items where documentation is required.
- Return completed controlled drug delivery records promptly to the Dispensary Controlled Drug Issues Team to ensure accurate record-keeping and compliance.

- Ability to safely use manual handling techniques and equipment such as push trolleys when transporting stock.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate completion of delivery records and controlled drug documentation.
- Reliable time management skills to complete routine and urgent deliveries within required timeframes.
- Effective communication skills to liaise with pharmacy staff, distribution leads, and ward teams about deliveries, collections, and any issues.
- Ability to maintain the cold chain for refrigerated medicines and items by following specified handling and transport requirements.
- Commitment to completing mandatory and essential training within set deadlines and applying the learning in daily duties.
- Willingness to comply with all Trust policies, procedures, and manual handling guidelines at all times.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience working in a healthcare, pharmacy, or logistics environment is beneficial.
- Familiarity with pharmacy operations, inventory handling, or order entry processes is an advantage.
- Pharmacy technician certification or related pharmacy qualifications are desirable but not required for the porter role.
- Experience handling sensitive or regulated items, such as controlled drugs, is an advantage.
- Ability to work flexibly across different tasks and adapt to changing priorities in a busy environment.
Work Environment
This role is based within a hospital pharmacy and its associated wards and departments, involving frequent movement across the hospital precinct. The Pharmacy Porter works in a fast-paced, operational environment where timely and accurate delivery of medicines and supplies is critical to patient care. The position involves regular use of manual handling equipment such as push trolleys and requires adherence to manual handling policies to move stock safely. The role includes handling a variety of items, including medicines, fluids, enteral feeds, refrigerated products, and controlled drugs, with strict compliance to cold chain and documentation procedures. Work follows a rota that includes multiple daily rounds to all wards and departments, as well as urgent deliveries that must be completed within short timeframes. Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $20.00/hr.
