Supports and assists the Pharmacist in the preparation, distribution, and inventory control of medication and performs other duties as necessary for the provision of patient focused pharmacy services. Assists with training of pharmacy technicians, has been trained and is a resource person for specialty area and has an active role in improving workflow. The Pharmacist will check all medications and preparations before they are dispensed. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards.

Working under the supervision of a licensed Pharmacist, you will support medication preparation, distribution, inventory management, and pharmacy operations while developing the skills needed for a successful pharmacy career. What You'll Do

As a Pharmacy Student, you will:

  • Assist with medication preparation, dispensing, distribution, and inventory control.
  • Support pharmacists in providing safe, accurate, and timely patient care services.
  • Accurately process medication orders and documentation within pharmacy systems.
  • Compound sterile products using proper aseptic technique and established procedures.
  • Help maintain medication inventory and identify outdated products.
  • Deliver medications to patient care areas in a timely manner.
  • Support pharmacy quality assurance, regulatory compliance, and safety initiatives.
  • Assist with workflow coordination and communication across departments.
  • Participate in training and mentoring new team members as appropriate.
  • Contribute ideas and solutions to improve efficiency, patient safety, and pharmacy operations.

What You'll Bring

Pharmacy Student I (P1)

Education

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited School of Pharmacy and completing your first professional year (P1).

Licensure

  • Registered and in good standing with the state Board of Pharmacy as either a Pharmacy Intern or Pharmacy Technician, as required by the state of practice.

Pharmacy Student II (P2)

Education

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited School of Pharmacy and completing your second professional year (P2).

Licensure

  • Valid Pharmacy Intern or Pharmacy Technician license/registration in accordance with state requirements and in good standing with the state Board of Pharmacy.

Pharmacy Student III (P3)

Education

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited School of Pharmacy and completing your third professional year (P3).

Licensure

  • Valid Pharmacy Intern or Pharmacy Technician license/registration in accordance with state requirements and in good standing with the state Board of Pharmacy.

Pharmacy Student IV (P4)

Education

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited School of Pharmacy and completing your fourth professional year (P4).

Licensure

  • Valid Pharmacy Intern or Pharmacy Technician license/registration in accordance with state requirements and in good standing with the state Board of Pharmacy.

Key Responsibilities

Medication Safety & Compliance

  • Follow aseptic compounding and infection prevention practices.
  • Adhere to hazardous medication handling and waste disposal procedures.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and regulatory compliance.
  • Perform medication storage and expiration date monitoring.
  • Promote patient and medication safety in all pharmacy activities.
  • Accurately perform pharmaceutical calculations and documentation.

Pharmacy Operations

  • Accurately prepare and fill medication orders.
  • Enter medication orders into pharmacy information systems.
  • Prioritize workload based on patient needs and operational demands.
  • Support inventory management, restocking, and medication delivery processes.
  • Complete quality assurance documentation and temperature monitoring.
  • Assist with packaging, prepackaging, and medication credit processing.

Teamwork & Communication

  • Communicate effectively with pharmacists, technicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
  • Ensure timely handoff of important information between shifts.
  • Respond professionally to phone inquiries and requests.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, training, and educational opportunities.
  • Support department initiatives, projects, and process improvement efforts.

Technology & Equipment

  • Utilize pharmacy technology and automated systems effectively.
  • Operate equipment such as automated dispensing cabinets, packaging systems, robotic dispensing technology, and IV compounding equipment as appropriate.

Mercy

Our Mercy health system was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1986. But our heritage goes back more than 185 years. It began with an Irish woman named Catherine McAuley, who wanted to help the poor women and children of Dublin. Though Catherine had a modest upbringing, she received an unexpected inheritance that allowed her to fulfill her dreams. In 1827, she opened the first House of Mercy in Dublin, intending to teach skills to poor women and educate children. Many volunteers came to help.
