Summary:
- The Pharmacy Technician is responsible for driving patient facing customer service for the University of Pennsylvania Health System Retail Services. Technicians, while under the direct supervision of registered pharmacists, help to support the general ongoing operations of the retail pharmacy. Daily tasks may include timely and accurately filling outpatient prescriptions, inventory management, preparation of medications for shipment or pickup, communicating to patients in-person and via telephone, investigating pharmacy benefits, and coordinating medication access.
Responsibilities:
- Prepares medications for dispensing under the supervision of the pharmacist, demonstrating accuracy, precision, and consistency relating to selection, packaging, and labeling functions.
- Retrieves and interpret prescriptions
- perform pharmaceutical calculations, considering patient and drug characteristics
- enter prescriptions, patient health information and insurance information into the clinical pharmacy information system for pharmacist review.
- Communicates with insurance carriers to obtain payment for prescription claims.
- Runs cash register accurately and dispenses prescriptions to patients
- Triages phone calls and requests from customers for assistance.
- Delivers medications to assigned areas
- Assists in maintaining proper inventory and control of drugs and supplies purchased by the Pharmacy. Regularly rotate medication inventory and check for expired medications.
Credentials:
- National Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT) required at the time of hire
- Must have an active Pharmacy Technician License, as required in the State of Practice in either Pennsylvania and/or New Jersey.
Education or Equivalent Experience:
- H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)
- Six months of prior Pharmacy experience in a retail/outpatient pharmacy or payer environment required
- Prior experience in Infusion sterile compounding only for Ambulatory Infusion preferred.
