Penn Medicine is seeking a full-time, day shift Infusion Pharmacy Tech III at our Valley Forge Infusion Pharmacy

Summary:

  • The Infusion Pharmacy Technician plays a critical role in supporting the preparation and delivery of sterile medications in a safe, accurate, and timely manner. Working under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, this position is responsible for compounding sterile products, maintaining cleanroom and equipment standards, managing inventory for infusion therapies, and ensuring compliance with USP <797>/<800>, state regulations, and organizational policies. The technician collaborates with pharmacists, nurses, and healthcare providers to meet patient care needs while upholding the highest standards of quality, safety, and infection control. This role requires strong attention to detail, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Safety 
    • Preparing IV medications accurately and aseptically 
    • Following all sterile compounding procedures 
    • Adhere to all recommendations for the handling of hazardous medications 
    • Maintain a sterile environment in accordance with USP 797 
    • Accurate and consistent use of dispense prep functionality 
    • Accurate and proper utilization of the closed system transfer device as needed for hazardous medication preparation 
    • Reporting any errors, near-misses, or concerns immediately 
    • Accurately label, package, and prepare infusion products for delivery.
  • Sterile Compounding Compliance 
    • Ensure timely preparation and delivery of medications • Following USP <797> and USP <800> standards 
    • Proper use of biological safety cabinets and laminar airflow hoods, = 
    • Correct hand hygiene, gowning, and PPE use • Maintaining cleanroom integrity at all times 
  • Accuracy & Attention to Detail 
    • Correct drug selection, concentration, and volume 
    • Accurate labeling (patient name, drug, dose, expiration, storage) 
    • Double-checking calculations and preparation steps as required 
    • Ensuring medications match the pharmacist’s verification 
  • Following Policies & Procedures 
    • Adhering to pharmacy SOPs (standard operating procedures) 
    • Following state board of pharmacy regulations 
    • Complying with employer and accreditation standards (e.g., Joint Commission) 
  • Documentation & Record-Keeping 
    • Accurately documenting: 
    • Compounding logs 
    • Lot numbers and expiration dates 
    • Cleaning and maintenance logs 
    • Ensuring records are complete, legible, and timely 
    • Manage inventory of IV solutions, medications, supplies, and compounding materials. 
    • Perform checks, logs, and documentation required for regulatory compliance. 
    • Utilize pharmacy systems and software for order entry, batching, and recordkeeping. 
  • Equipment & Environment - Proper use and care of: 
    • Compounding hoods 
    • Cleanroom equipment 
    • Reporting equipment issues or contamination risks 
    • Assisting with routine cleaning and environmental monitoring 
    • Assist with equipment checks, environmental monitoring, and calibration as required. 
  • Communication & Teamwork 
    • Communicating clearly with pharmacists and other staff 
    • Asking questions when unsure—never guessing 
    • Reporting discrepancies, shortages, or delays 
    • Supporting safe workflow and teamwork 
    • Coordinate with pharmacists to resolve medication discrepancies or issues. 
  • Professional Conduct 
    • Maintaining patient confidentiality (HIPAA compliance) 
    • Working within the technician scope of practice 
    • Demonstrating reliability, punctuality, and integrity 
    • Staying current with required training and competencies

Credentials:

  • Certified Pharmacy Technician - PTCB (Required)
  • Certified Oncology Pharmacy Technician (preferred)

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • H.S. Diploma/GED (Required)
  • Bachelor's diploma preferred.
  • Previous pharmacy experience in chemotherapy/oncology/infusion is strongly preferred.
