An outpatient infusion pharmacy technician assists in preparing and compounding sterile intravenous (IV) medications for ambulatory patients. Core duties include preparing hazardous and non-hazardous drugs, managing inventory, maintaining compliance with safety standards, and ensuring patients receive their treatments on time. This role requires a high degree of accuracy, attention to detail, and adherence to USP <797> and <800> sterile compounding standards to ensure patient safety and regulatory compliance.
Key Responsibilities
Sterile Compounding: Mix chemotherapy, biologics, and other IV admixtures under aseptic conditions.
Hazardous Drug Handling: Adhere to safety standards by wearing proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Medication Preparation: Calculate, measure, label, and prepare medications according to patient-specific orders.
Inventory Management: Monitor stock levels, rotate inventory, and remove expired medications.
Workflow Coordination: Sync medication preparation with scheduled outpatient infusion appointments.
Equipment Maintenance: Clean and sanitize the sterile compounding area, cleanrooms, and equipment.
Documentation: Maintain compounding logs, temperature logs, and waste documentation.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Active Pharmacy Technician registration/license in IL.
National certification (CPhT) through PTCB or ExCPT preferred; may be required within 12 months of hire.
Minimum 1 year of sterile compounding or IV room experience in a hospital, home infusion, or outpatient infusion pharmacy setting.
Experience with chemotherapy preparation and hazardous drug handling.
Demonstrated knowledge of aseptic technique and USP <797>/<800> compliance.
