Pharmay Technician Responsibilities

Filling Orders

• Fill medication orders accurately and promptly for pharmacist verification.
• Prepare extemporaneous medications accurately.
• Stock pharmacy areas and replenish carts, trays, boxes, and medication kits.
• Complete required paperwork and documentation.
• Perform cart/bin exchanges and transfer bulk medications as needed.
• Return unused or discontinued IVs and medications.
• Check medication expiration dates and replace medications or supplies as needed.

Distribution & Returns

• Handle requests received by phone, window, fax, and computer.
• Distribute orders to the appropriate pharmacist when necessary.
• Deliver medications using pneumatic tubes, hand delivery, and courier services.
• Collect, sort, and process medication returns from nursing stations.

Sterile Preparations

• Prepare IV medications using proper aseptic/sterile technique.
• Batch IV medications and complete required documentation.
• Monitor IV medication levels and assist with treatment coordination.
• Demonstrate knowledge of IV equipment, sterile technique, TPN, and safe handling of hazardous medications.

Automated Dispensing Machines

• Accurately fill and maintain automated dispensing machines.
• Fill stock-outs and resolve failed drawer issues.
• Review discrepancy reports and complete reconciliation documentation.
• Remove expired medications and document destruction.
• Perform routine inspections of designated automated dispensing machines.
• Troubleshoot equipment issues and escalate problems when necessary.

Repackaging & Inventory Control

• Repackage oral medications accurately.
• Ensure products are properly bar-coded and labeled.
• Check medication expiration dates and remove outdated products.
• Retrieve recalled medications from stock locations.
• Maintain organized medication and supply storage areas.
• Obtain and stock medications and supplies as needed.

Teamwork & Customer Service

• Support departmental goals and maintain efficient pharmacy workflow.
• Work collaboratively with pharmacists, pharmacy staff, nurses, patients, and other healthcare professionals.
• Answer phones and assist customers professionally and courteously.
• Handle routine problems independently and escalate issues when appropriate.
• Participate in performance improvement and cost-saving initiatives.
