UC Health is hiring a full-time Pharmacy Technician Diversion Coordinator at the University of Cincinnati's Medical Center pharmacy administration department

Under the supervision of the Pharmacy Manager, and according to standard procedure, the Coordinator-Pharmacy Technician Operations is responsible for developing and planning the nonprofessional operations of the department. This can include, but is not limited to, coordinating procurement, workflow, processes and services related to drug, equipment, and supplies. This includes tasks such as purchasing, diversion auditing, technology management, inventory management, distribution, and record keeping for medications in the pharmacy department as well as the associated clinics and departments that require medications; initiating purchase orders for pharmaceuticals, supplies, and service contracts; receiving and distribution of supplies, processing purchase requisitions, authorizing payment for wholesaler invoices, maintaining adequate inventory levels, providing inventory action and communication relative to shortages, recalls, alternative product source and selection. They collaborate within their facility and across the system as necessary for medication ordering, inventory management, medication distribution, auditing, and record keeping, ensuring that all regulatory standards are met and maintained. In addition, they maintain an active technician certification and the competency to be able to assist in times of extreme technician shortage or emergency.

Responsibilities

Coordinating operational components of the diversion monitoring program.

• Performs surveillance reviews, audits, data analysis, discrepancy investigations, and reporting
• Assists with policy compliance, staff training on best practices, and collaborates across departments like nursing, public safety, risk management, HR, and DHS.
• Supports the Medication Safety and Diversion Pharmacist in other diversion tasks
  • Conduct proactive surveillance of CS usage using analytics dashboards, ADC reports, and EHR documentation.
  • Perform routine and targeted audits, including:
  • ADC discrepancies and resolution timeliness
  • Wastage patterns
  • High-risk medication reports
  • ADC user behavior anomalies
  • Assist in preliminary investigations by compiling timelines, data summaries, and review packets.
  • Escalate identified concerns to the supervising pharmacist or diversion prevention committee.
  • Maintain meticulous documentation of reviews, findings, and actions taken.
  • Support compliance with DEA and Ohio Board of Pharmacy standards.
  • Participate in policy and workflow development for secure CS handling.
  • Train and educate pharmacy and nursing staff on proper CS processes.
  • Coordinate ADC optimization efforts, including configuration, security settings, and user audits.
  • Support diversion response activities, including evidence preservation and incident tracking.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to improve system safeguards and reduce diversion risk.

• Expertise with Automated Dispensing Cabinets (ADCs), EHR medication workflows, and CS chain-of-custody processes
• Ability to analyze trends, identify anomalies, and escalate concerns

Contributes to the quality and effective operation of the department:

• Participates in the recruitment, retention, performance enhancement and competency assessment of subordinate staff in collaboration with Pharmacy management team members.

• Establishes productive, collaborative relationships with team members

• Participates in department and hospital continuous quality improvement and medication safety initiatives where appropriate.

• Coordinates, orients, trains, and provides functional guidance to designated Pharmacy Technicians and support staff.

• Participates in the development of tools and standards to establish and improve competency levels of the pharmacy technician, student, and support staff including orientation of new employees, in-service training, and competency assessments.

• Maintains active technician certification and competency to be able to assist in times of extreme technician shortage or emergency.

Coordinate and assist with human resource activities within the area of responsibility:

• Interview and recommend selected applicants for employment

• Assist in personnel orientation, training, and development

• Fosters a team environment by providing continuous feedback during orientation and training of new team members

• Assists with evaluation of personnel and gives continuous feedback for technical team members

• Assists with corrective action counseling or recognition, as appropriate

Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or GED. Preferred: Associate degree

License and Certification: Required: Pharmacy technician certification (Preferred: PTCB pharmacy technician certification). Required: Certified technician registered with the state of Ohio Board of Pharmacy

Years of Experience: Minimum Required: 3 - 5 Years equivalent experience in Hospital/Health System Pharmacy or Equivalent. Preferred: 1 - 2 Years equivalent experience in Hospital/Health System Pharmacy or Equivalent In Hospital/Health System Pharmacy Leadership.

Required Skills and Knowledge: Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision; work cooperatively with health-system and pharmacy staff; handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule; set priorities, make critical decisions, and respond quickly to emergent requests; exercise sound professional judgment; communicate effectively (orally and in writing); and meet the pharmaceutical care needs of the patient populations served by UC Health.

The expected starting salary range for this position is between $28.98/hr.- $38.42/hr.

The actual pay rate for this position will be dependent on a variety of factors, including an applicant's years of experience, unique skills and abilities, alignment with similar internal candidates, marketplace factors, and other requirements for the position
