This role supports a highly automated central fill pharmacy that packages and distributes medications to retail pharmacies across multiple states. The Pharmacy Technician manually fills prescriptions, replenishes medications for automated dispensing stations, packages and stocks medications, and performs related tasks to ensure accurate, efficient, and compliant prescription fulfillment in a fast-paced production environment.

Responsibilities

• Manually fill prescriptions by selecting the correct pharmaceutical product, verifying size and strength, and ensuring the appropriate quantity for each order.
• Use scanners and computer systems to identify and select the correct product and quantity for prescription orders, verify display for pack and quantity, and enter expiration dates and lot numbers.
• Label prescriptions accurately, weigh medications to confirm quantity, and count or pour medication for prescription orders in accordance with established procedures.
• Prepare and package medications for distribution to retail pharmacies, maintaining a continuous and consistent workflow to meet daily production and quality goals.
• Replenish automated medication counting machines and dispensing stations to ensure continuous operation and minimize downtime.
• Maintain pharmacy systems and technology, including inventory systems and automated medication counting machines, by preparing related records and reports to ensure accurate data and compliance with policies and regulations.
• Monitor inventory levels and expiration dates for pharmaceuticals, calibrate machines, and apply appropriate settings to pill or capsule specifications to minimize breakage.
• Troubleshoot pill cell issues, such as jamming, throughout production and escalate issues as needed to maintain productivity.
• Sort, place, and store pharmaceutical freight in appropriate locations, restock and replenish medications, and report low stock levels to support continuous operations.
• Ensure proper stock rotation on a first-in, first-out basis to assist with shrinkage control and maintain product integrity.
• Perform inventory cycle counts and assist with physical inventory counts, creating reports using inventory information systems as required.
• Monitor prescription inventory for expired pharmaceuticals and ensure timely removal and processing of outdated stock.
• Enter and modify pharmaceutical data in systems and on forms, process and submit required paperwork, and create and maintain documentation such as files, manuals, forms, records, and supplies.
• Prepare reports of pharmacy activities and inventory, including state board-mandated testing of counting devices, to support regulatory compliance.
• Identify and resolve discrepancies in records or files, and inform management about incorrect or inefficient processes and improper service procedures.
• Utilize automated inventory control scanners and systems to track and ensure timely and appropriate delivery and stocking of pharmaceuticals and supplies.
• Ensure adherence to documented inventory control procedures, including product strategies and product description discrepancy management.
• Audit and test pill cell performance according to prescribed schedules and procedures, manage pill cell information databases, and troubleshoot performance issues.
• Identify and properly discard hazardous waste in accordance with established procedures and regulatory requirements.
• Process recalled and expired pharmaceuticals and dispose of or coordinate the return of outdated stock for credit.
• Collaborate with pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and shipping and receiving staff to maintain an efficient, accurate, and safe production environment.

Essential Skills

• Meets state requirements to work as a Pharmacy Technician, including qualification, registration, certification, and/or licensure as required by the State Board of Pharmacy.
• Registered Pharmacy Technician in Indiana.
• Registered Pharmacy Technician in Minnesota.
• Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential, such as PTCB or equivalent pharmacy technician certification.
• Demonstrated experience or training in pharmacy operations, including prescription fulfillment and medication handling.
• Ability to use pharmacy inventory systems, automated medication counting machines, scanners, and related technology.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy when counting, labeling, and packaging medications in a high-volume environment.
• Ability to stand for the majority of the shift, including standing in one spot for extended periods, in a fast-paced production setting.
• Capability to follow strict procedures, policies, and regulatory guidelines related to pharmacy operations and inventory control.
• Effective communication skills to document activities, complete reports, and coordinate with team members and leadership.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Retail pharmacy or warehouse experience, particularly in environments that involve inventory management and order fulfillment.
• Prior experience in a central fill, pill-pack, specialty or mail-order production pharmacy, or shipping department.
• Customer service experience in a pharmacy or healthcare-related setting.
• Experience with fulfillment and compounding workflows in pharmacy environments.
• Pharmacy technician certificate or diploma from an accredited program.
• Familiarity with automated inventory control systems, pill cell technology, and state board-mandated testing procedures for counting devices.
• Ability to identify process improvements and communicate recommendations to management.
• Comfort working with standardized operating procedures and detailed documentation requirements.

Work Environment

This position is based in a newer, highly automated central fill pharmacy facility that prepares and packages prescriptions for retail pharmacies, rather than dispensing directly to patients. The environment is a closed-door pharmacy setting with no direct customer service or patient-facing responsibilities. The team includes pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and shipping and receiving coordinators, with approximately 200 staff onsite. The role operates on a first shift schedule, typically from 5:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., Sunday through Wednesday. The work environment is fast paced and production oriented, requiring a high level of attention to detail and the ability to maintain consistent productivity and accuracy. Technicians use automated medication counting machines, inventory systems, scanners, and other pharmacy technologies throughout the shift. The position requires standing for most of the day, often in one spot, while performing repetitive tasks such as counting, packaging, and replenishing medications. The facility is closed on Thanksgiving, and operations emphasize safety, regulatory compliance, and teamwork in a structured production setting.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Plainfield, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $19.50/hr.
