    Posting Summary

    Rutgers Cancer Institute and RWJBarnabas Health seek an academically oriented medical oncologist or hematologist to join and help grow our Phase 1 Experimental Therapeutics Program. The successful candidate will play a key role in the design, conduct, and expansion of early-phase clinical trials while increasing patient access to innovative cancer therapies at New Jersey's only NCI-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and across the RWJBarnabas Health system.

    Candidates with an interest in Phase I trial development and translational research are encouraged to apply. Disease specialization is flexible and will be aligned with the successful candidate's clinical and research interests with opportunities to maintain and grow a disease-specific practice while participating in a robust early-phase therapeutics program.

    Opportunity Highlights

    • Conduct and develop early-phase clinical trials, including first-in-human, targeted therapy, immuno-oncology, and combination studies.
    • Ensure protocol adherence and compliance with ICH-GCP, FDA regulations (21 CFR), IRB requirements, and institutional SOPs.
    • Author and review protocols, informed consent documents, abstracts, and manuscripts.
    • Interpret and integrate pharmacokinetic (PK), pharmacodynamic (PD), and correlative/biomarker data into clinical decision-making.
    • Collaborate with sponsors, CROs, translational scientists, pharmacists, and research coordinators to advance study conduct and portfolio growth.
    • Contribute to feasibility assessments, site selection, for new early-phase trials and expand access throughout the RWJBarnabas Health network.
    • Mentor students, housestaff, fellows, and junior faculty, and research staff.
    • Startup support and research infrastructure will be provided to facilitate clinical trial development and academic growth.

    The successful candidate will join the faculty of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School on the Clinical Scholar track, with approximately 0.6 clinical FTE dedicated to supporting both academic and clinical priorities. Clinical practice will be located in the Jack & Sheryl Morris Cancer Center, a state-of-the-art, freestanding cancer hospital designed to advance cancer research and patient care through multidisciplinary collaboration.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Education and Experience

    Qualified candidates must have:

    • MD or equivalent degree
    • Completed or completing an accredited Hematology/Oncology fellowship program
    • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Medical Oncology and/or Hematology
    • Eligible for or currently holding a New Jersey medical license
    • Demonstrated interest and experience in clinical research

    Certifications/Licenses Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Preferred Qualifications

    Experience in Phase I or early-phase clinical trials is preferred. Candidates at mid-senior level with experience and expertise in conducting and leading clinical research.

    Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School

    As New Jersey's only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, Rutgers Cancer Institute, in partnership with RWJBarnabas Health, is a leader in cancer research, treatment, prevention, and education. Rutgers Cancer Institute offers world-class cancer care, providing patients with the most advanced treatment options through an integrated cancer care network, including clinical trials, immunotherapy, precision medicine, complex surgical procedures, and sophisticated radiation therapy techniques. Rutgers Cancer Institute and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, an RWJBarnabas Health facility, are one of only two programs in the state to offer blood and marrow transplantations and CAR T-cell therapy. It also houses the state's only hospital-based proton therapy center. Rutgers Cancer Institute is a cornerstone of New Jersey's premier academic health center, Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS).

    Construction is currently underway for a new $750 million state-of-the-art Cancer Center adjacent to the current Rutgers Cancer Institute facility and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. The 510,000 square foot Jack and Sheryl Morris Cancer Center will be the state's first free-standing cancer hospital. It will feature outpatient and inpatient clinical space-including 84 infusion bays, 74 exam rooms, and 96 inpatient beds.     Rutgers Cancer Institute is home to nearly 250 internationally recognized physicians and researchers. The long-standing relationship with their NCI Research Consortium Partner Princeton University was recently leveraged to establish the Ludwig Cancer Research Princeton Branch with several faculty as founding members and leaders of the Branch. Their work on cancer metabolism, not only through the new Ludwig Branch but also through the Duncan and Nancy MacMillan Cancer Immunology and Metabolism Center of Excellence at Rutgers Cancer Institute, will accelerate and translate laboratory discoveries into clinical treatments through more effective and efficiently designed clinical trials.

    The Rutgers Cancer Institute's Duncan and Nancy MacMillan Cancer Immunology and Metabolism Center of Excellence is an institute at the intersection of oncologic immunology and metabolism that seeks to increase research that leads to new therapies for patients; develop cutting-edge facilities to test new interventions; and facilitate commercial and university collaborations.
