Job Title: Phlebotomist
Job Description
This phlebotomist role focuses on performing blood draws and specimen collections while supporting a high-volume, fast-paced clinical environment. You assist with troubleshooting, training, and recommending workflow improvements to ensure accurate, efficient, and safe laboratory operations.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring patient comfort and safety.
- Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures.
- Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection processes to patients.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate test ordering and identification.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders.
- Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts to ensure complete accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport, following protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
- Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes.
- Follow specific procedures and protocols for specimen handling and transport to preserve sample quality.
- Fully understand and interpret physicians' orders related to laboratory testing and specimen requirements.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required by laboratory procedures.
- Update patient information accurately in electronic medical records and related systems.
- Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to address inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety standards.
- Attend annual department trainings to maintain current knowledge of procedures and regulations.
- Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, labeling, and workflow.
- Contribute to training and mentoring team members on proper phlebotomy techniques and procedures.
- Make recommendations to improve workflow efficiency and overall laboratory operations.
Essential Skills
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
- Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- High school diploma or GED.
- 2-4 years of overall work experience.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Demonstrated experience performing blood draws and venipuncture.
- Knowledge of different needle gauges and phlebotomy techniques.
- Ability to enter data accurately in different electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
- Strong customer service skills to support a high volume of patients.
- Experience with specimen collection, including blood, urine, and other sample types.
- Ability to follow detailed laboratory protocols and physicians' orders accurately.
- Understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations related to laboratory safety and specimen handling.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience as a phlebotomy technician or medical assistant.
- Some prior phlebotomy experience, even if formal certification is not required by the employer.
- Comfort working in a fast-paced, emergency room-style environment with high patient volume.
- Strong communication skills to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients.
- Attention to detail in labeling, handling, and storing specimens.
- Ability to multitask and manage time effectively in a busy clinical setting.
Work Environment
This position is based in a fast-paced clinical facility set up similarly to an emergency room, with more than 100 patients passing through daily. The schedule typically runs Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., with every other Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. You work with electronic medical record systems, laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, and standard phlebotomy tools, including straight and butterfly needles. The environment emphasizes efficiency, accuracy, and patient-centered service, and you collaborate closely with clinical and laboratory staff to support continuous patient flow and high-quality diagnostic services.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.
