Job Title: Phlebotomist

Location: 1 VA Center, Augusta, ME 04330.
Duration: 1 year contract with the possible of 4 more years extension
Shift Schedule:
  • Day shift: 09:00 to 05:30 (2 FTE)
  • Evening shift: 3:00 to 11:30 (2 FTE)
  • Rotating weekends, approximately 1 to 2 per month. Weekend day 0600 to 1400, weekend evening 1330 to 2100.
  • Weekends, holidays, and overtime may be required.
How Many Shifts Needed Per Month: Weekend coverage is approximately 1 to 2 weekends per month per position, subject to lab needs. Weekend/holiday/evening hours are estimated at 8 hours per month per position.
Credentialing / Onboarding Time: 6 weeks to 8 weeks
License: Any state license works.
Certifications:
  • BLS
  • Phlebotomist certification
Experience Needed: 3 years of recent phlebotomy experience
Special Skills Needed:
  • Fluent English: speak, understand, read, and write
  • Proficient in inpatient ward rounds, inpatient and outpatient draws, Emergency Department, STAT, ASAP, and timed draws
  • Positive patient and specimen identification
  • Sample processing and send-out preparation
  • Quality control documentation and resolution of collection, processing, testing, or reporting issues
Responsibilities:
  • Perform patient phlebotomy across inpatient ward rounds, inpatient, outpatient, ED, STAT, ASAP, and timed draws.
  • Perform sample processing and send-out preparation.
  • Positively identify patients prior to collection and samples prior to testing or aliquoting.
  • Safeguard electronic and paper patient information.
  • Independently test, evaluate, document, and report patient testing and quality control.
  • Identify, document, and resolve collection, processing, testing, or reporting issues.
  • Provide patient-centered care in a professional manner.
  • Complete QM/PI documentation per the laboratory quality plan.
  • Report patient safety events to the COR within 24 hours.
  • Participate in laboratory quality improvement meetings (monthly, 12 hours/year) and staff meetings (monthly, 12 hours/year).
