The Phlebotomist provides expert support in blood collection and specimen preparation, ensuring high-quality samples are obtained with minimal discomfort for patients across a wide range of ages and backgrounds. This role focuses on accurate specimen handling, clear communication with patients, and strict adherence to safety and regulatory standards to support exceptional patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and other blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, consistently obtaining sufficient samples with minimal patient discomfort.
  • Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
  • Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients to help them feel informed and at ease.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes, ensuring all specimens are correctly identified and associated with the proper orders.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, maintaining specimen integrity throughout the process.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts or orders to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
  • Package specimens securely for transport, following required procedures to maintain appropriate conditions and prevent contamination or damage.
  • Store specimen samples at required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling, following protocol for transport and storage.
  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required, keeping equipment and work areas clean and compliant with standards.
  • Update patient information accurately and promptly in the relevant systems or documentation.
  • Understand and fully interpret physicians' orders related to laboratory testing and specimen handling.
  • Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations, following all safety and regulatory guidelines in daily work.
  • Wear appropriate attire and personal protective equipment as required for safe specimen collection and handling.
  • Attend annual department trainings to maintain and update skills, knowledge, and compliance with current procedures and regulations.
  • Answer telephone calls in a professional manner and read or relay laboratory results to respond to inquiries within scope of responsibility.

Essential Skills

  • 2-3 years of experience drawing blood in a clinical or laboratory setting.
  • Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques, including venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.
  • Demonstrated experience in blood draws, specimen labeling, centrifuging specimens, and specimen processing.
  • Ability to accurately collect, label, store, and prepare specimens according to established procedures.
  • Strong administrative skills and high attention to detail for handling requisitions, labels, and patient information.
  • Ability to fully understand and follow physicians' orders related to laboratory testing.
  • Competence in checking test requisitions or computer labels against scripts or orders to ensure complete accuracy.
  • Knowledge of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations related to laboratory safety and specimen handling.
  • Strong communication skills to clearly and courteously explain procedures to patients and respond to inquiries.
  • Ability to answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy appropriate inquiries.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with infant and pediatric blood draws is a plus.
  • Experience with a variety of blood draw techniques and specimen processing workflows.
  • Comfort working with a wide demographic of patients and helping them feel at ease during procedures.
  • Interest in a role that may involve in-state travel and working in different locations.
  • Strong organizational skills and reliability in following established protocols and procedures.

Work Environment

This is a full-time role with a schedule of Monday through Friday, typically from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The position may involve in-state travel and offers variety in work locations, making it well-suited for candidates who enjoy a change of scenery. The work involves performing phlebotomy and specimen preparation in clinical or laboratory environments, using equipment such as straight needles, butterfly needles, centrifuges, and appropriate collection containers. The role requires adherence to safety protocols and regulatory standards, including the use of appropriate attire and personal protective equipment to maintain a safe and compliant environment.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Bedford Hills, NY.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
