Job Title: Phlebotomist
Job Description
The Phlebotomist plays a key role in collecting and processing specimens while supporting smooth laboratory workflows. This position involves performing blood draws and other specimen collections, ensuring accurate labeling and handling, complying with safety regulations, and assisting with troubleshooting, training, and workflow improvement recommendations in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws and other specimen collections, including venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles, in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner.
- Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture process and other specimen collection procedures (such as urine or fecal collection) to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Collect and store specimens according to established procedures, maintaining specimen integrity throughout the collection and handling process.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and ensure all specimens are correctly labeled in accordance with test orders and protocols.
- Centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, following detailed laboratory procedures.
- Verify all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy before processing or transport.
- Package specimens appropriately for transport, following protocol to maintain specimen quality and integrity during transit.
- Store specimen samples at the required temperatures and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes, accurately labeling and following all procedures specific to each protocol.
- Update patient information accurately in the system and maintain detailed records of specimen collection, processing, and storage.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to support a clean and compliant laboratory environment.
- Fully understand physicians' orders and ensure that all specimen collection and processing aligns with those orders.
- Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results or information, as appropriate, to satisfy inquiries in a professional and customer-focused manner.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory guidelines.
- Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection and processing and contribute recommendations to improve workflow.
- Support training efforts by demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and specimen handling procedures to colleagues when needed.
Essential Skills
- Demonstrated experience performing blood draws and venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
- Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a clinical environment.
- Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required in some states.
- Strong phlebotomy skills, including proficiency with straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Ability to collect, label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to established procedures and test orders.
- Proficiency in updating and managing patient information accurately.
- Attention to detail in matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying labels against orders to ensure complete accuracy.
- Understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations and the ability to comply with all safety and regulatory requirements.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
- High school diploma or GED.
- 0-2 years of overall experience in a medical or laboratory environment, including phlebotomy duties.
- Strong customer service skills and the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients and clinical staff.

- Experience working in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting, managing multiple specimen collections and tasks efficiently.
- Comfort handling various specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, while following protocol-specific procedures.
- Basic knowledge of laboratory operations and specimen processing workflows.
- Ability to read and relay laboratory results over the phone in a professional and accurate manner.
- Strong organizational skills to manage specimen tracking, storage, and transport preparation.
- Ability to assist with training and workflow improvement by sharing best practices and demonstrating proper techniques.
Work Environment
This role is based in a fast-paced clinical or laboratory setting where you work closely with patients, healthcare providers, and laboratory staff. You will regularly handle blood and other biological specimens, operate equipment such as centrifuges, and use computer systems and Microsoft Office applications to manage orders and patient information. The environment emphasizes strict adherence to safety and regulatory standards, including OSHA and DEP guidelines, with established protocols for specimen collection, storage, and transport. Work may involve standing for extended periods, moving between collection areas and the lab, and managing multiple tasks throughout the day while maintaining a calm, professional, and patient-focused demeanor.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $20.00/hr.
