Job Title: Phlebotomist
Job Description
The Phlebotomist plays a key role in supporting laboratory operations by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, processing and storing samples according to strict protocols, and ensuring accurate documentation and data entry. This position works independently in a fast-paced clinical environment, troubleshooting issues, assisting with training as needed, and recommending workflow improvements while delivering excellent customer service to patients and clinical staff.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws and venipunctures using straight needles and butterfly needles on a variety of patient populations, including pediatric patients.
- Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and test requirements.
- Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Label all specimens accurately and completely, matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying all information for 100% accuracy.
- Centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
- Prepare, package, and organize specimens for transport while maintaining specimen integrity and following protocol-specific handling procedures.
- Store specimens at the required temperatures and place samples in the appropriate collection containers or tubes according to guidelines.
- Update and maintain accurate patient information and perform order entry and related data entry tasks using computer systems.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory procedures.
- Understand and correctly interpret all physician orders related to laboratory testing and specimen collection.
- Answer telephone calls in a professional manner and relay or read laboratory results as needed to satisfy inquiries within scope of practice.
- Attend required annual departmental trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures and protocols.
- Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory requirements.
- Work independently as the sole on-site laboratory representative, managing the full process from patient interaction through specimen processing and documentation.
- Contribute to workflow improvements by troubleshooting issues and making recommendations to enhance efficiency and quality.
Essential Skills
- At least 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced clinical or laboratory environment.
- Demonstrated ability to perform blood draws and venipunctures independently, including on pediatric patients.
- High school diploma or completion of a GED program.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation, communication, and data entry tasks.
- Strong phlebotomy skills, including blood draw, specimen collection, and venipuncture techniques.
- Experience with specimen handling, including labeling, sample preparation, specimen management, and specimen storage.
- Ability to operate and use a centrifuge for specimen processing.
- Competence in data entry and order entry within laboratory or clinical systems.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow physician orders and laboratory requisitions accurately.
- Excellent customer service skills and the ability to work with patients from start to finish in the collection and processing workflow.
- Ability to work independently as the primary on-site laboratory professional.
- Understanding of and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations and laboratory safety procedures.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Phlebotomy certification is not required but related training or coursework is beneficial.
- Experience working with pediatric patients is required; experience with geriatric patients is a plus.
- Experience in medical assisting, laboratory, blood bank, biobank, or handling biological samples is advantageous.
- Familiarity with Cerner or similar electronic medical record or laboratory information systems is helpful.
- Experience handling patient specimens across various types, including blood, urine, and fecal samples.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in labeling, documentation, and specimen tracking.
- Ability to maintain professionalism and clear communication with patients, clinicians, and staff in a busy environment.
- Interest in potential temp-to-hire opportunities and long-term growth within a clinical or laboratory setting.
Work Environment
This is a full-time, day-shift position, typically scheduled Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with slight variations possible depending on clinic needs. The role is based primarily at a Fort Wayne facility and may require travel to nearby locations as needed; mileage and drive time are compensated when applicable. The work takes place in a clinical and laboratory setting that involves regular use of phlebotomy equipment, centrifuges, computers, and laboratory information systems. The environment is fast-paced and patient-facing, requiring consistent professionalism, adherence to safety and regulatory standards, and careful handling of biological specimens. Appropriate clinical attire is expected to ensure safety, cleanliness, and a professional appearance.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $22.24 - $22.24/hr.
