Job Title: Phlebotomist
Job Description
This Phlebotomist position focuses on providing safe, accurate, and compassionate specimen collection while supporting a smooth and efficient workflow in a fast-paced clinical environment. You will perform blood draws and other specimen collections, process and store samples according to established procedures, and assist with related administrative tasks to ensure high-quality patient care from start to finish.
Responsibilities
- Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a safe, accurate, and efficient manner.
- Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols.
- Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate identification and traceability.
- Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test orders, maintaining specimen integrity at all times.
- Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport in accordance with protocol to preserve quality and integrity during transit.
- Store specimens at the required temperature, place samples in the appropriate collection containers or tubes, and follow specific procedures outlined by protocol for handling and transport.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to maintain a clean and safe work area.
- Update patient information accurately in the system and complete order entry to support the full patient workflow from start to finish.
- Assist in troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, processing, and workflow, and make recommendations to improve efficiency.
- Participate in training activities and assist in training others as needed to support consistent, high-quality practices.
- Understand and fully interpret physicians' orders to ensure correct tests and procedures are performed.
- Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries when appropriate.
- Attend annual department trainings and remain current with policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Deliver excellent customer service to all patients and colleagues, ensuring a positive and respectful experience.
- Support multiple Patient Service Centers (PSCs) and In-Office Phlebotomy (IOP) locations as needed, including floating between sites in the designated area.
Essential Skills
- At least 6 months of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced environment.
- High school diploma or GED completion.
- Proficiency in performing venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Experience with specimen handling, including labeling, sample preparation, sample storage, and specimen management.
- Ability to operate a centrifuge and process blood and other biological samples accurately.
- Competence in matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verifying orders for accuracy.
- Skill in packaging specimens for transport and storing specimens according to required temperature and protocol.
- Knowledge of and ability to understand physicians' orders and follow detailed laboratory procedures.
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong data entry skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to provide excellent customer service and communicate clearly and courteously with patients and colleagues.
- Capability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple tasks.
- Willingness and ability to attend and participate in annual department trainings.
- Understanding of and compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations related to laboratory and specimen handling.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Phlebotomy certification is not required but may be beneficial.
- Preferred experience of approximately 2 years in phlebotomy or a related role.
- Experience working with pediatric and geriatric patient populations is preferred.
- Experience in laboratory, blood bank, biobank, or handling biological samples is advantageous.
- Experience in medical assisting or similar clinical support roles is helpful.
- Comfort with floating between multiple Patient Service Centers (PSCs) and In-Office Phlebotomy (IOP) locations as needed.
- Strong customer service orientation and ability to manage the patient experience from check-in through specimen collection and processing.
- Interest in a potential temp-to-hire opportunity, depending on performance and business needs.
Work Environment
This role operates primarily in a clinical laboratory or patient service center setting with a focus on specimen collection and processing. The position follows a daytime schedule, Monday through Friday, with hours generally between 6:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., and specific shift times may vary. Training takes place in the Fort Wayne area, and some team members may remain at a single location while others float between multiple Patient Service Centers and In-Office Phlebotomy sites in the surrounding area. You will work with standard laboratory equipment such as needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen storage systems, and you will use computers and Microsoft Office for order entry, data entry, and documentation. The environment is fast-paced, detail-oriented, and patient-facing, requiring consistent adherence to safety protocols, regulatory standards, and established procedures.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $22.24 - $22.24/hr.
