Title: Per diem (as needed) Phlebotomist- Poughkeepsie, NY- Full Time, Monday - Friday 7:30am - 4:30pm.

SUMMARY: Performs phlebotomy with minimal supervision as well as a variety of clerical and computer related activities independently. This individual interacts with patients of all ages, works effectively with others to meet the needs of the patients and maintains the highest level of care possible.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs Phlebotomy activities on patients of all ages with minimal supervision
  • Collects Stat, Timed and other samples by venipuncture or capillary puncture, being aware of the importance of timing in instances such as therapeutic drug levels, etc.; follow established guidelines for laboratory specimens.
  • Verify all patient information prior to specimen collection.
  • Label all samples collected.
  • Initial, Time and Date all blood specimen tubes
  • Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following departmental procedure and observing isolation procedures.
  • Performs other duties such as data collecting, filing, faxing, assisting technologist
  • Maintains copies of outpatient orders in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Maintains copies of manually requested patient tests in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Exhibits polite, considerate and caring attitude when interacting with patients, their families, physicians and hospital staff.
  • Reports system problems to the Lab Supervisor/Lead Phlebotomist and Health Quest IT Department.
  • Specimen Processing of all samples submitted to laboratory for testing.
  • Verifies all samples are labeled correctly.
  • Verifies all samples are in correct containers/ tubes/media
  • Centrifugation of samples
  • Visually verify all sample integrity prior to pick up by Vassar Diagnostics. If samples are adequate, place in appropriate specimen pick up. If samples are inadequate follow established Cancellation Policy.
  • Provides accurate information and timely resolution to physicians/nursing who call the lab
  • Provides assistance to all incoming phone calls to the lab and answers all telephone calls in a courteous manner and routes to the appropriate individuals
  • Records messages accurately and routes to appropriate individual
  • Performs Computer related activities as required.
  • Monitors patient collection in Cerner
  • Maintain accuracy of orders in computer, sensor for duplicates or errors
  • Print labels from computers and reprint if necessary
  • Generate laboratory manifest and packaging of all samples for courier pick up.
  • Competency with use of laboratory hand-held equipment (PT/INR POC monitor
  • Competency with use of label printer
