POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Ø Perform venous blood collection procedures competently with as little patient discomfort as possible.
Ø Perform blood culture collection procedures.
Ø Demonstrate knowledge of color top tube to use, volume of blood needed and test requirements.
Ø Identify the patient by comparing patient information on the requisition to the patient’s identification band before venipuncture is performed.
Ø Dispose all sharps in a rigid sharp container.
Ø Follow standard precautions at all times.
Ø Monitor computer/labels/computer reports to ensure accurate collections.
Ø Registers patients’ samples accurately to ensure appropriate billing.
Ø Collect pertinent insurance information.
Ø Answer any questions/phone calls pertaining to patient results.
Ø Prioritize STAT, scheduled and outpatient orders.
Ø Display courteous, professional manner towards patients, co-workers, nursing and medical staff.
Ø Assist physician offices with all laboratory needs.
Ø Maintains a clean working area.
Ø Clean and supply venipuncture trays.
Ø Periodically required to travel offsite for specimen pickup, phlebotomy or report delivery.
Ø Maintain patient/employee confidentiality and privacy at all times.
Ø Complete assigned duties efficiently and in a timely manner.
Ø Performs duties necessary to ensure quality in the department.
Ø Seek guidance and direction when necessary.
Ø Demonstrate the value of team concept on a consistent basis.
Ø Participate in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement activities.
Ø All other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
Ø High School Diploma or G.E.D. preferred
Ø Current BLS certification (or obtain prior to the completion of orientation)
Ø Basic computer skills
Ø Communication ability
Ø Phlebotomy skills preferred
Ø Offsite travel requirements: valid driver’s licensure, clean driving history
