POSITION TITLE: Phlebotomist DEPARTMENT: Ancillary

NATURE OF POSITION: The Phlebotomist performs waived testing and corresponding controls, and these which he/she has the required training. Also, this position assists with supply inventory and records.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Training appropriate for the tests being administered

RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Performs venipuncture on adults and pediatrics
  • Performs capillary (finger, toe, heal) blood collection on adults and pediatrics
  • Processes specimens according to test specifications
  • Records workload and test results according to established lab protocols
  • Processes pap smear results and keeps the tickler file for follow-up
  • Performs waived and approved testing using appropriate equipment and materials
  • Performs and appropriately documents quality control procedures, instrument checks and maintenance reports
  • Consults with supervisor when controls are out of range, test results are abnormal, or when difficulties are encountered in testing procedure
  • Maintains good working relationships with other employees and observes patient confidentiality
  • Protects the confidentiality of patients and their records at all times by complying with the COFMC policies regarding patient confidentiality
  • Performs all other duties as assigned
