This Phlebotomist I position focuses on providing safe, accurate, and compassionate specimen collection services in a fast-paced clinical environment. You will perform venipunctures and other specimen collections, process and store specimens according to established procedures, and support smooth workflow through troubleshooting, training assistance, and process improvement recommendations. The role also includes patient registration, basic data entry, and clear communication with patients and clinical staff to ensure a high standard of care.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipunctures and other specimen collections, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, following established procedures and safety protocols.
• Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients, ensuring they understand the process and feel at ease.
• Collect and store specimens according to established procedures, maintaining specimen integrity and adhering to required temperature and handling guidelines.
• Demonstrate and use proper techniques with straight needles and butterfly needles for patients across all age groups, from pediatric to geriatric.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information for accuracy before processing.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, ensuring all steps follow protocol.
• Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the provider's orders to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Package specimens for transport according to protocol, including placing samples in appropriate containers or tubes and labeling them accurately.
• Follow detailed procedures for specimen handling and transport to maintain specimen integrity and compliance with regulatory standards.
• Update patient information and register patients accurately as they arrive, ensuring records are complete and current.
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to maintain a clean and safe work area.
• Process specimens, including receiving, verifying, and preparing them for analysis or transport.
• Answer telephone calls in a professional manner and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries as appropriate.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety standards.
• Attend annual department trainings and stay current on procedural updates and regulatory requirements.
• Contribute to workflow efficiency by assisting with troubleshooting issues and making recommendations for process improvements.
• Provide courteous, patient-centered service while drawing approximately 25 patients per day in a fast-paced setting.

Essential Skills

• Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, as required by state regulations.
• Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
• 1-2 years of phlebotomy experience, including routine blood draws and specimen collection.
• Proficiency in performing blood draws and venipunctures using straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Hands-on experience with specimen collection, labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and processing.
• Ability to collect, handle, and store specimens according to established procedures and test requirements.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic data entry, record keeping, and communication.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Experience providing phlebotomy services to a wide age range, including pediatric and geriatric patients.
• Strong customer service skills and the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients and staff.
• Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify information.
• Knowledge of and ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and safety standards.
• Ability to work efficiently and accurately in a fast-paced clinical environment while managing a steady patient volume.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience drawing approximately 25 patients per day and managing workflow in a busy setting.
• Comfort working with pediatric patients, including explaining procedures in an age-appropriate and reassuring manner.
• Experience working with geriatric patients and adapting techniques to meet their specific needs.
• Ability to register patients accurately and update patient information in electronic systems.
• Experience answering telephone inquiries and communicating laboratory results when appropriate and permitted.
• Attention to detail in specimen labeling, handling, and documentation to prevent errors.
• Willingness to attend annual department trainings and stay current with procedural and regulatory updates.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks in a clinical environment.

Work Environment

This role is based in a fast-paced clinical or laboratory setting with a schedule of Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. You will work directly with patients across a broad age range, from pediatric to geriatric, and can expect to perform blood draws on roughly 25 patients per day. The environment involves frequent interaction with patients and clinical staff, use of standard phlebotomy equipment such as straight and butterfly needles, centrifuges, and specimen containers, and regular use of computers and Microsoft Office Suite for patient registration and data entry. You will follow established safety protocols and regulatory guidelines, including OSHA and DEP standards, and participate in annual department trainings to maintain compliance and best practices.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Provo, UT.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.98 - $18.98/hr.
