The Phlebotomist II plays a key role in safely and efficiently collecting, processing, and handling patient specimens while supporting a high-volume clinical environment. This position combines hands-on phlebotomy, specimen processing, and data entry with troubleshooting, training support, and workflow improvement recommendations to ensure accurate and timely laboratory services.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, consistently meeting daily volume expectations of at least 30 patients.
  • Collect and store blood and other specimens, such as urine or fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
  • Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is accurate and complete before processing.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders, following all laboratory protocols.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against physician scripts or orders to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport and maintain specimen integrity by following correct procedures for temperature control and handling.
  • Store specimen samples at the required temperatures and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.
  • Fully interpret and understand physicians' orders to ensure proper specimen collection and processing.
  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to maintain a safe and compliant work area.
  • Update and maintain accurate patient information and specimen records in laboratory systems, including use of Microsoft Office applications as needed.
  • Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results or information to satisfy appropriate inquiries in a professional manner.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory guidelines.
  • Attend annual department trainings and apply updated procedures, safety practices, and workflow improvements.
  • Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection, labeling, processing, and workflow, and make recommendations to improve efficiency.
  • Support training efforts by demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and best practices to colleagues when needed.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform high-volume phlebotomy, including drawing blood from at least 30 patients per day.
  • Hands-on experience with blood draws, specimen labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging specimens for transport.
  • Proficiency in venipuncture techniques using both straight needles and butterfly needles.
  • Experience with specimen collection beyond blood, including urine and fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures.
  • Ability to accurately match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information against physician orders.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure 100% accuracy in labeling, handling, and processing specimens.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and the ability to comply with all safety and regulatory standards.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for data entry, record keeping, and communication.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Bilingual fluency in Spanish and English.
  • Prior experience in OB/GYN phlebotomy settings.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 2-4 years of overall work experience in healthcare or laboratory environments in addition to formal phlebotomy responsibilities.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced clinical or hospital setting with high patient volumes.
  • Strong communication skills to clearly explain procedures and respond to patient and staff inquiries.
  • Ability to interpret and fully understand physicians' orders related to laboratory tests and specimen requirements.
  • Experience updating patient information and maintaining accurate records within laboratory or clinical systems.
  • Capability to assist with troubleshooting workflow issues and contributing recommendations to improve efficiency and quality.
  • Professional telephone etiquette and experience relaying laboratory results or information as appropriate.

Work Environment

This role operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting that supports high patient volumes and a variety of clinical services, including OB/GYN. The work environment involves frequent direct patient interaction for blood draws and other specimen collections, as well as time spent at laboratory stations for labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging specimens. The position requires regular use of phlebotomy equipment such as straight and butterfly needles, centrifuges, and specimen containers, along with computer systems and Microsoft Office Suite for data entry and record management. Team members must follow strict safety, OSHA, and DEP guidelines, adhere to established laboratory protocols, and participate in annual department trainings. The environment is structured, procedural, and detail-oriented, with a focus on accuracy, specimen integrity, and timely processing to support quality patient care.

This is a Contract position based out of Houston, TX.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $22.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
