Job Description

The Phlebotomist II supports high-quality patient care by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, processing and preparing specimens for transport, and maintaining accurate documentation. This role involves working in a float capacity across multiple clinic locations, serving primarily adult and geriatric patients, with some pediatric collections. The position requires strong technical phlebotomy skills, the ability to manage a high volume of daily draws, and a commitment to excellent customer service and safety standards.

Responsibilities

• Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, ensuring safe and accurate venipuncture for patients from pediatric through geriatric populations.
• Collect and store blood and other specimens, including urine and fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols.
• Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all test requisitions or computer labels against orders to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and otherwise process specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
• Package specimens for transport and follow all procedures necessary to maintain specimen integrity, including correct temperature storage and appropriate collection containers or tubes.
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks in accordance with laboratory procedures and safety guidelines.
• Update and maintain accurate patient information and documentation related to specimen collection and processing.
• Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct tests and procedures are performed.
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results as needed to respond to inquiries in a professional manner.
• Attend annual department trainings and remain current with all required procedures, policies, and regulations.
• Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety standards in the handling, processing, and transport of specimens.

Work Environment

This role is based in a clinical setting with initial training provided during the first two weeks at a designated site. After training, the Phlebotomist II works in a float capacity and travels to a wide range of clinic locations, including Merrillville, LaPorte, Knox, Crown Point, Munster, Schererville, Chicago, Dyer, Valparaiso, and Michigan City. The position involves drawing and processing specimens in various outpatient and clinic environments, requiring adaptability to different workflows and teams. Schedules are provided 1–2 weeks in advance to indicate where to report each day. The role requires availability Monday through Friday between 6:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m., with rotating Saturday shifts from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. or 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.; a weekday off is provided when a Saturday shift is scheduled, which typically occurs about once per month. The work involves regular travel, for which mileage is reimbursed, and consistent adherence to clinical safety standards and specimen handling protocols

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Itasca, IL.

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $23.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.

This is a fully onsite position in Itasca,IL.
