Job Title: Phlebotomist II

Job Description

The Phlebotomist II plays a key role in providing high-quality patient care by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, ensuring accurate labeling and handling of specimens, and supporting smooth laboratory workflow. This role involves troubleshooting collection issues, maintaining equipment and documentation, and making workflow improvement recommendations while working independently in a fast-paced environment, including a recovery center setting.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws and venipunctures using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high level of accuracy and patient care.
  • Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and test requirements.
  • Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture, blood draw, and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is 100% accurate.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure correctness before processing.
  • Package specimens for transport in accordance with protocol to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in appropriate collection containers or tubes, following all procedures specific to each protocol.
  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks to support a clean and safe work area.
  • Update patient information accurately in the system and maintain detailed records related to specimen collection and processing.
  • Fully understand and interpret physicians' orders related to laboratory tests and ensure all orders are followed correctly.
  • Answer telephone calls professionally and provide laboratory results or information to satisfy appropriate inquiries.
  • Attend required annual department trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of procedures and regulations.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and compliance standards.
  • Work independently while managing time effectively to meet collection and processing deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Provide courteous, responsive customer service to patients, clinical staff, and other stakeholders.
  • Identify and suggest workflow improvements to enhance efficiency and quality in specimen collection and processing.

Essential Skills

  • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
  • Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
  • 1-2 years of experience in phlebotomy, including routine and difficult blood draws.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture and blood draws using both straight needles and butterfly needles.
  • Experience with specimen collection, labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging for transport.
  • Ability to handle hard sticks and perform phlebotomy in a recovery center environment.
  • Strong ability to work independently and manage responsibilities with minimal supervision.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic data entry, documentation, and communication tasks.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 2-4 years of overall work experience in a related healthcare or laboratory setting.
  • Solid customer service skills and the ability to interact professionally and courteously with patients and staff.
  • Understanding of and ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and other safety standards.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Comfort working in a recovery center setting and performing frequent difficult venipunctures (hard sticks).
  • Strong attention to detail when matching requisitions to specimen tubes and verifying patient and test information.
  • Effective verbal communication skills to explain procedures clearly to patients and respond to telephone inquiries.
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple specimens, documentation, and workflows in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot specimen collection or processing issues and recommend workflow improvements.
  • Commitment to ongoing learning, including participation in annual department trainings and updates to procedures.
  • Reliable, punctual, and able to consistently cover assigned morning collection windows.

Work Environment

This role operates in a fast-paced clinical and laboratory environment, including work within a recovery center where difficult venipunctures (hard sticks) are common. The standard schedule for this position is 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., seven days a week. There is flexibility to structure the schedule as Monday through Friday for one person and Saturday/Sunday for another, or to accommodate different combinations of days, as long as the 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. time window is reliably covered. The work involves frequent patient interaction, use of phlebotomy equipment such as straight and butterfly needles, centrifuges, and specimen storage systems, and regular use of computers and Microsoft Office Suite for data entry and communication. The environment requires adherence to strict safety, decontamination, and regulatory standards, including OSHA and DEP guidelines. Professional clinical attire suitable for a healthcare and laboratory setting is expected, along with proper use of personal protective equipment as required by protocol.

This is a Contract position based out of Portland, ME.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $22.00/hr.
