This Phlebotomist II role focuses on delivering high-quality specimen collection and processing in a fast-paced, high-volume laboratory or hospital environment. You assist with blood draws and other specimen collections, troubleshoot issues, support training, and recommend workflow improvements to ensure accurate, timely, and safe laboratory operations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipunctures and other specimen collections, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, using straight needles and butterfly needles while maintaining patient comfort and safety.
  • Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture and specimen collection process to patients, ensuring they understand each step.
  • Collect, label, and store specimens according to established procedures and specific test requirements to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all test requisitions or computer labels accurately match the physician's orders and scripts.
  • Centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the test order, following proper protocols for handling and processing.
  • Package specimens for transport, ensuring they are placed in appropriate containers or tubes, correctly labeled, and maintained at the required temperature.
  • Update and maintain accurate patient and specimen information in systems and records, including recording maintenance data and decontamination activities.
  • Understand and fully interpret physicians' orders to ensure correct tests and procedures are performed.
  • Answer telephone calls and communicate laboratory results or information as needed to satisfy inquiries.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and quality guidelines.
  • Attend required annual department trainings and stay current with procedural and regulatory updates.
  • Assist with troubleshooting workflow issues, support training of colleagues, and make recommendations to improve efficiency and quality in daily operations.
  • Work as a float phlebotomist, traveling between assigned locations as required and adapting to different site workflows and volumes.

Essential Skills

  • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
  • Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Approximately 2-4 years of overall related experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in performing blood draws and venipunctures using straight needles and butterfly needles.
  • Experience labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, and performing decontamination tasks.
  • Ability to collect and handle various specimen types, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, according to established procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail when matching laboratory requisitions to specimen tubes and verifying test orders.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to understand, interpret, and follow physicians' orders accurately.
  • Knowledge of and adherence to OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Strong communication skills to explain procedures to patients and answer telephone inquiries.
  • Ability to work effectively in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.

  • Experience working in high-volume sites with over 100 patients per day.
  • Comfort working as a float phlebotomist across multiple locations.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks while maintaining accuracy and quality.
  • Strong customer service skills and a courteous, patient-focused approach.
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing training and departmental initiatives.

Work Environment

This is a float Phlebotomist II position that supports multiple locations, including sites in Bayshore, Babylon, Hicksville, and Commack. The primary shift runs Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with additional coverage noted as Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and every Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., depending on site needs. You work in a high-volume environment, with some locations serving over 100 patients per day, requiring efficiency, strong organizational skills, and consistent attention to detail. The role involves frequent interaction with patients, regular use of phlebotomy equipment such as straight needles, butterfly needles, centrifuges, and specimen transport systems, and adherence to strict safety and regulatory standards. The dress code typically reflects a professional clinical setting, such as appropriate medical attire and personal protective equipment, to support safe and hygienic patient care.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Stony Brook, NY.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $25.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
