Job Description

This role requires an experienced phlebotomist who demonstrates strong proficiency in blood collection by venipuncture and capillary techniques for patients of all age groups, including neonates, infants, children, and adults. You will perform pediatric and neonatal blood draws, including difficult collections in high-volume medical office building settings and inpatient. The position also involves supporting and orienting patient service technicians, promoting best practices in phlebotomy and safety, and delivering excellent customer service in a patient-centered environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood collection by venipuncture and capillary techniques for patients across all age groups, including neonates, infants, children, and adults.
  • Carry out pediatric and neonatal blood draws, including difficult draws
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of compliance, safety, and infection control standards, and consistently apply these standards in daily practice.
  • Effectively communicate the importance of compliance and safety to coworkers and contribute to a culture of safety and quality.
  • Manage inpatient workloads in hospital settings, drawing approximately 20-30 patients within an 8-hour shift as needed.
  • Work under the supervision of the lab supervisor and team lead while collaborating closely with the broader laboratory and clinical team.
  • Utilize laboratory information systems (such as Cerner or similar) to accurately document, label, and track specimens.
  • Deliver professional, courteous, and empathetic customer service to patients, families, and clinical staff.
  • Maintain excellent attendance, punctuality, and professional behavior to support reliable and consistent patient care.
  • Demonstrate strong, independent venipuncture skills and knowledge without requiring basic phlebotomy training on the job.
  • Perform heel sticks and other specialized neonatal and pediatric draws based on prior hands-on experience with actual patients.
  • Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures, including performance and conduct expectations, while contributing positively to the team environment.

Essential Skills

  • Demonstrated proficiency in blood collection by venipuncture and capillary techniques for all age groups, including pediatric and neonatal patients.
  • At least six months of experience in an acute or sub-acute setting, with a preference for one year of experience.
  • Hands-on infant draw and neonatal experience beyond classroom-only training.
  • Experience working with pediatric patients in clinical or hospital environments.
  • Inpatient hospital experience with the ability to draw approximately 20-30 patients in an 8-hour shift.
  • Current CPT I license.
  • High school diploma.
  • Proficiency with laboratory information systems, such as Cerner or similar platforms.
  • Strong computer literacy and ability to navigate electronic systems efficiently.
  • Proven customer service skills and a patient-centered approach.
  • Excellent attendance record and consistent professional behavior.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible shifts and hours.
  • Strong independent venipuncture skills, with no need for basic phlebotomy training on the job.
  • Practical experience performing neonate and pediatric draws on actual patients.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Hospital experience in an acute or sub-acute setting is a strong plus.
  • Experience in high-volume outpatient laboratory settings such as independent draw stations or large diagnostic labs.
  • Experience working in both medical office buildings and hospital-based main laboratories.
  • Ability to manage high draw volumes while maintaining accuracy, safety, and patient comfort.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with lab supervisors, team leads, and clinical staff.
  • Demonstrated reliability, adaptability, and a strong work ethic in fast-paced clinical environments.
  • Commitment to patient care and alignment with a culture that prioritizes safety, quality, and service.

Work Environment

The role is based primarily inpatient hospital environment and as needed, in outpatient settings. The environment is fast-paced and patient-focused, with a strong emphasis on safety, compliance, and teamwork. You will use modern laboratory information systems, such as Cerner or comparable platforms, along with standard phlebotomy and specimen collection equipment.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Irvine, CA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $25.00/hr.
