Part-Time Phlebotomist / Laboratory Technician
Location: Federal detention facility – Los Angeles, California
Schedule: Part-Time | Up to 30 hours per week
Shift Range: Typically between 6:00 AM – 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday
Position Overview
We are seeking a qualified Phlebotomist / Laboratory Technician to provide clinical laboratory services within the facility's Health Services Department. This role involves direct clinical work including specimen collection, laboratory preparation, documentation, and infection control procedures. The position requires professionalism, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a secure correctional healthcare environment.
Schedule & Work Hours
• Approximately 6 one‐hour sessions per day
• Up to 30 hours per week
• Monday – Friday (excluding federal holidays)
• Work hours generally fall between 6:00 AM – 4:00 PM
• Schedule determined weekly based on facility needs
Key Responsibilities
• Perform venipuncture and routine blood collection
• Collect specimens including urine, stool, and other diagnostic samples
• Conduct pregnancy screening tests when required
• Perform urine dipstick testing and stool guaiac testing
• Prepare, package, and label laboratory specimens for courier pickup
• Coordinate specimen transfer to outside laboratories
• Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure proper sanitation
• Follow infection control and biohazard disposal procedures
• Maintain accurate laboratory logs and specimen documentation
• Assist with laboratory reports and record management
• Ensure patient identification and proper labeling procedures
• Follow facility safety and clinical protocols at all times
Work Environment
The services will be performed within a secure correctional healthcare setting. The role may require interaction with individuals in custody during medical testing and specimen collection. Personnel must maintain professionalism, follow all institutional policies, and adhere to security procedures.
Qualifications
• Graduate of an accredited phlebotomy training program or qualified Medical Assistant
• Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) or equivalent certification preferred
• Minimum of one year of clinical, laboratory, or hospital experience
• Experience with venipuncture and specimen handling
• Knowledge of infection control procedures
• Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy
• Ability to work in a secure healthcare environment
Additional Requirements
Selected candidate must successfully complete required federal facility clearance procedures, which may include:
