Job Description

This phlebotomist role is based in Manhattan and focuses on delivering high-quality, efficient, and compassionate blood collection services in a fast-paced outpatient setting. You will perform venipunctures independently from day one, manage specimens according to strict protocols, and support a high volume of patients each day while maintaining professionalism, accuracy, and excellent customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles, independently and confidently from the first day.
  • Collect blood and other specimens, including urine and fecal samples, according to established procedures and protocols.
  • Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients, ensuring they understand the process and feel at ease.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes to ensure accurate test ordering and processing.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the specific test order and protocol.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against the script or order to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport, following all guidelines to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Store specimen samples at the required temperature and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes.
  • Follow detailed procedures specific to each protocol to ensure specimens are suitable for transport and testing.
  • Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to maintain a clean and safe work area.
  • Update patient information accurately and promptly in the system, including data entry related to specimen collection and processing.
  • Provide professional, courteous, and responsive customer service to all patients and colleagues.
  • Communicate clearly with patients and team members, demonstrating strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Maintain punctuality and reliability in attendance and daily workflow to support consistent patient care.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum 1 year of experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
  • 2+ years of recent phlebotomy experience, with the ability to perform venipunctures independently from day one.
  • Proficiency using straight needles and butterfly needles for venipuncture.
  • Strong phlebotomy skills, including blood drawing, specimen collection, and specimen processing.
  • Experience working in an outpatient or patient service center environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic data entry and documentation tasks.
  • Reliable and punctual work habits with a strong sense of responsibility.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain procedures clearly and courteously to patients.
  • Demonstrated professionalism and a strong customer service orientation.
  • Ability to handle a high volume of patients while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Bilingual Spanish skills are preferred and highly valued in supporting a diverse patient population.
  • Experience handling 30–50 patients daily, with the ability to flex up to 60 patients as needed.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, high-volume outpatient or clinic environment.
  • Strong data entry skills and comfort working with computer-based requisitions and labels.
  • Ability to follow detailed protocols and procedures to ensure specimen integrity and accurate test results.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a calm, reassuring demeanor when working with patients who may be anxious about blood draws.

Work Environment

This position is based in a patient service center in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, serving an outpatient population. The site typically sees 30–50 patients per day, with volumes occasionally reaching up to 60 patients. The schedule runs Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., with a rotating Saturday shift from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. You will work in a fast-paced clinical environment that requires consistent attention to detail, safe handling of specimens, and adherence to laboratory protocols. The role involves regular use of phlebotomy equipment, including straight needles, butterfly needles, centrifuges, and specimen storage systems, as well as computer systems for data entry and label generation. Professional clinical attire appropriate for a patient-facing healthcare setting is expected.H

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of New York, NY.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $23.00 - $23.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
