Job Description: Phlebotomist

Work Location: Memphis VA Medical Center, Memphis, TN

Contract Length: Base Year - Plus 4 Option Years

  • Expected Schedule (Monday – Friday) for the following shifts:
  • Day, Mid, and Night shifts available
  • Note: The daily tour of duty is eight and a half hours including a 30-minute unpaid lunch break.

Position Summary

Solvet Services is seeking a compassionate, skilled, and detail-oriented Phlebotomist to provide specimen collection services at the Memphis VA Medical Center. The Phlebotomist is responsible for collecting blood and other approved specimens from Veterans in both inpatient and outpatient settings while ensuring patient safety, specimen integrity, and compliance with Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), HIPAA, and Solvet Services policies and procedures.

The ideal candidate demonstrates excellent venipuncture skills, strong customer service, and a commitment to providing respectful, high-quality care to Veterans.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection on adult patients using established laboratory procedures.
  • Correctly identify patients using approved patient identification protocols before specimen collection.
  • Collect blood specimens using appropriate collection methods.
  • Label specimens accurately at the patient's bedside in accordance with laboratory policies.
  • Process, prepare, centrifuge, and package specimens for laboratory testing and transport.
  • Ensure specimen integrity by following proper collection, handling, storage, and transportation procedures.
  • Enter patient and specimen information accurately into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and electronic health record (EHR).
  • Maintain chain-of-custody documentation when required.
  • Monitor specimen collection supplies and maintain adequate inventory levels.
  • Clean, disinfect, and maintain phlebotomy equipment and collection areas.
  • Observe infection prevention and control practices, including proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to patient reactions during specimen collection, including syncope or other adverse events.
  • Provide courteous, professional, and compassionate service to Veterans, family members, and healthcare staff.
  • Assist laboratory personnel with specimen receipt and processing as needed.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and VA privacy regulations.
  • Participate in quality assurance activities, competency assessments, and continuing education.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Solvet Services management or the VA Contracting Officer's Representative (COR).

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited Phlebotomy Training Program or equivalent documented experience.
  • National certification as a Phlebotomy Technician preferred through organizations such as:
    • American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)
    • National Healthcareer Association (NHA) or (CPT)
    • American Medical Technologists (AMT)
    • National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)
  • Minimum of one (1) year of recent phlebotomy experience in a hospital, clinic, laboratory, or healthcare setting preferred.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture and specimen collection techniques.
  • Basic computer proficiency and experience using laboratory information systems or electronic medical records.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience working within the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Department of Defense (DoD), or other federal healthcare systems.
  • Experience performing high-volume outpatient and inpatient blood collections.
  • Familiarity with VA laboratory procedures and electronic health record systems.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

Security Requirements

  • Must successfully complete all required background investigations and credentialing necessary for access to VA facilities.
  • Must comply with all Veterans Affairs security, privacy, cybersecurity, and information protection requirements.
  • Must maintain eligibility to work under federal government contracts.

Work schedules may include days, evenings, weekends, holidays, or rotating shifts based on contract requirements and patient care needs.
