The Phlebotomist plays a key role in supporting laboratory operations by performing blood draws and other specimen collections, processing and labeling samples, troubleshooting routine issues, and recommending workflow improvements. This position ensures accurate specimen handling, compliance with safety regulations, and clear communication with patients and clinical staff in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles with a high level of accuracy and patient care.
  • Collect and store specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and protocols.
  • Explain the specimen collection process clearly and courteously to patients, ensuring they understand venipuncture and other collection methods.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information for complete accuracy.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
  • Check test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy before processing.
  • Package specimens securely for transport and follow required procedures to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Store specimen samples at appropriate temperatures and place them in correct collection containers or tubes according to protocol.
  • Follow detailed procedures for specimen handling and transport to preserve quality and comply with laboratory standards.
  • Understand and fully interpret physicians' orders related to laboratory testing and specimen requirements.
  • Record maintenance data and perform routine decontamination tasks to support a clean and safe laboratory environment.
  • Update patient information accurately in laboratory or hospital systems.
  • Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries as appropriate.
  • Attend annual department trainings and maintain up-to-date knowledge of laboratory procedures and regulations.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety standards.
  • Contribute to workflow efficiency by identifying issues, assisting with troubleshooting, and making practical recommendations for process improvement.

Essential Skills

  • Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
  • Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures and blood draws in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, venipuncture, and blood draw techniques.
  • Experience with specimen collection, including blood, urine, and fecal samples.
  • Ability to process medical laboratory specimens, including labeling, centrifuging, splitting, and freezing according to test orders.
  • Skill in matching laboratory requisitions to specimen tubes and verifying information for accuracy.
  • Understanding of OSHA and DEP regulations and commitment to following safety and compliance standards.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 0-2 years of overall experience in a medical or laboratory environment, including at least 6 months of blood draw experience.

  • Experience working in pediatric or general medical settings.
  • Background in medical laboratory processing and specimen processing.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients and clinical staff.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in labeling, documentation, and data entry.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities.
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing training and professional development.

Work Environment

This role is based in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting where you work with medical staff, patients, and a variety of laboratory technologies and equipment such as centrifuges, specimen freezers, and computer systems for data entry and results reporting. The environment requires strict adherence to safety and infection control protocols, including compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations. You will handle blood and other biological specimens, follow temperature and storage requirements, and participate in annual department trainings. Work may involve standing for extended periods, moving between collection areas and processing stations, and managing multiple specimen collections and inquiries throughout the day.

This is a Contract position based out of Mount Pleasant, SC.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $22.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
