Job Description

This float phlebotomist position supports multiple patient service centers across the North Brooklyn area and focuses on delivering high-quality blood collection and specimen processing services. You will perform 20-40 blood draws per day, manage 30-50 patients daily, and ensure accurate data entry and specimen handling in a fast-paced, patient-centered environment. The role requires at least 2 years of phlebotomy experience, strong customer service skills, and confidence using straight needles, while working with a predominantly adult population.

Responsibilities

  • Greet patients upon arrival, verify identity, and complete intake and registration in the internal system.
  • Perform 20-40 blood draws per day using straight needles and, when appropriate, butterfly needles in accordance with established procedures.
  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures and test requirements.
  • Label specimens accurately, ensuring correct patient information and test details are recorded.
  • Centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders.
  • Perform data entry and processing of samples, including updating and maintaining patient records in the system.
  • Document all patient interactions, specimen collections, and any issues encountered in the internal system.
  • Handle and process specimens, including recording maintenance data related to equipment and procedures.
  • Decontaminate work areas and equipment in accordance with safety and infection control protocols.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area to support efficient patient flow and specimen handling.
  • Demonstrate proper venipuncture techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles as needed.
  • Provide courteous, professional, and empathetic customer service to a diverse patient population, including a high percentage of adults and geriatric patients.
  • Update patient information as needed to ensure accurate and current records.
  • Support additional laboratory tasks such as accessioning and related processes as training is completed.
  • Work as a float phlebotomist, traveling between assigned patient service centers in North Brooklyn to provide coverage as needed.
  • Multi-task effectively to manage high patient volumes while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2 years of hands-on phlebotomy experience, including regular blood draws.
  • Proficiency and full comfort using straight needles for venipuncture.
  • Demonstrated experience performing blood draws, venipuncture, and specimen collection in a clinical setting.
  • Strong data entry skills with the ability to accurately enter and update patient information in an internal system.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage a high volume of patients while maintaining accuracy and quality.
  • Strong customer service skills with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with patients and colleagues.
  • Ability to process, label, and handle specimens according to established procedures.
  • Comfort working with a predominantly adult population, including geriatric patients.
  • Minimum education of a high school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to work as a float across multiple locations within the North Brooklyn area.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience as a Phlebotomy Technician or Medical Assistant with phlebotomy responsibilities.
  • Experience with centrifuges and specimen preparation for laboratory testing.
  • Customer-facing healthcare experience in patient service centers, clinics, or similar environments.
  • Experience working with geriatric patients.

Work Environment

This role is based in the North Brooklyn territory and operates as a float position across multiple patient service centers. Phlebotomists work in a clinical patient services environment with steady patient flow, typically seeing 30-50 patients per day. The setting includes standard phlebotomy and laboratory equipment such as straight needles, butterfly needles, specimen collection supplies, labeling tools, and centrifuges. Schedules include part-time daytime shifts with consistent Saturday hours, such as combinations of Monday through Friday between approximately 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., as well as Tuesday-Saturday options. The work requires moving between assigned locations within the territory, working on-site with patients, and maintaining a professional clinical appearance appropriate for a healthcare environment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Brooklyn, NY.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $26.29 - $26.29/hr.
