Job Summary and Qualifications

Collects blood and performs some tests, such as Urinalysis and Bedside Glucose. Inputs patient information and test results into computer, performs computer functions as needed including nightly operations, and assists in other duties as directed by Laboratory Management.

What you will do in this role:

  • Collects blood and performs some tests, such as Urinalysis and Bedside Glucose. Inputs patient information and test results into computer, performs computer functions as needed including nightly operations, and assists in other duties as directed by Laboratory Management.
  • Accurately labels all blood tubes using correct barcode labels, matches tests to correct colored tubes, and records collection time/initial on all labeled specimens.
  • Adheres to hospital attendance and tardiness policy. Appropriately clocks in/out and returns from break and lunch on time.
  • Adheres to schedule and provides coverage in assigned areas. Adaptable to changes in work flow.
  • Adjusts break and lunch times to ensure appropriate department coverage for optimal patient care.
  • Always follows blood collection policy. Properly collects blood culture specimens.
  • Answers phone by 4th ring. Takes messages and transfers calls appropriately. Strictly follows Personal Telephone/Cell Phone Usage policy (916-010).
  • Appropriately uses inventory of and supplies, properly disposes of sharps.
  • Assists in maintaining general cleanliness and safety of work area to ensures that work area is clean and free of safety hazards.
  • Can perform venipuncture and capillary (finger & heel) sticks on infants, children and adults.
  • Collects specimens and processes requisitions during computer downtime per SOP. Uses appropriate downtime procedures.
  • Correctly collects, processes/sends, documents and files COC drug screen, when needed.
  • Expectations Ethics and Compliance: 1. All employees will be held accountable for behaviors displayed relative to the values articulated in the Mission and Values Statement. “Will act with absolute honest, integrity and fairness in the way we conduct our business and the way we live our lives.” 2. All employees will be held accountable for attending training regarding the Code of Conduct program at least annually.
  • Follows SOP for checking and reconciling un-received specimens and draws. Print/review/reconcile computer reports as assigned.
  • Has no unapproved overtime.  

What qualifications you will need:
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
