SUMMARY:
Collects blood specimens and maintains the integrity of the specimen in relation to the test being performed. Processes, labels and distributes specimens for testing.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Properly identifies patient before obtaining specimen and labels the samples subsequent to the collection in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures. • Performs any laboratory procedures, which must be accomplished at the time of collection. • Transports patients' specimens to the laboratory, or makes arrangements for delivery of specimens to the laboratory in a timely manner. • Keys and verifies computer input data, assigns identification numbers, and produces specimen collection lists/labels and other computer reports. • Legibly documents failure-to-draw reasons according to laboratory policies and procedures. • Processes and delivers specimens received in the laboratory to the proper sections for analysis. • Resolves routine problems related to specimen collection and specimen processing. • Consults reference manuals to ensure specimens are properly packaged for send out. • Coordinates the dispatch log and courier requests for specimens being sent to outside laboratories. • Uses lab computer system to enter and retrieve pertinent patient information. • Consults with medical staff and other health care providers on matters relating to laboratory services. • Answers telephones, routes callers, takes messages and provides information to callers. • Sets up, calibrates, cleans and performs routine maintenance on laboratory centrifuges. • Operates a personal computer, calculator, FAX machine, copy machine or related office machinery in performing assigned duties. • Requests and orders supplies as necessary to keep materials on hand at all times. • Assists in training new personnel in accordance with laboratory and phlebotomy department policies and procedures. • Adheres to TMC organizational and department-specific safety, confidentiality, values policies and standards. • Performs related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED), or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
EXPERIENCE:
Six (6) months of experience collecting blood specimens.
LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION:
None required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
• Knowledge of the proper collection of blood specimens and proper chain of custody to ensure integrity of the specimens. • Skill in the collection of blood specimens. • Skill in organizing labels and work to ensure timely completion of tasks. • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. • Ability to complete routine reports and correspondence. • Ability to listen and accurately interpret others' communication or instructions to take appropriate action. • Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization. • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
