Job Description

This part-time phlebotomist position offers the opportunity to provide high-quality patient care in a patient service center in Queens. You will perform blood draws, process and label specimens, and accurately enter patient information into the system while delivering excellent customer service. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented professional with strong phlebotomy skills and comfort using computers, who enjoys working in a structured outpatient setting with a steady flow of patients.

Responsibilities

  • Greet patients upon arrival, verify identity, and complete required intake and registration in the internal system.
  • Perform venipuncture and blood draws, averaging approximately 20-40 draws per day, using straight needles and butterfly needles as appropriate.
  • Collect, handle, and store specimens according to established procedures and test requirements.
  • Accurately label specimens, including applying barcodes or other identifiers, to ensure proper tracking and processing.
  • Centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and laboratory protocols.
  • Perform data entry for patient information, test orders, and specimen details, ensuring accuracy and completeness in the system.
  • Process specimens, including preparation for transport or analysis, following standard operating procedures.
  • Record routine maintenance data and assist with decontamination tasks to support a clean and safe work area.
  • Update and maintain patient records in the internal system after each interaction, including documenting procedures performed.
  • Provide courteous, professional, and empathetic customer service to a primarily adult patient population, including geriatrics.
  • Demonstrate and consistently apply proper phlebotomy techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.
  • Follow all safety, infection control, and specimen handling protocols to maintain quality and compliance.
  • Participate in training and, over time, take on additional tasks such as accessioning and other lab support functions.
  • Collaborate with other staff members to manage patient flow, ensuring timely service for approximately 30-50 patients per day.

Essential Skills

  • At least 1 year of phlebotomy experience, with 2 or more years preferred.
  • Proficiency in venipuncture and blood drawing, including experience using straight needles.
  • Ability to perform 20-40 blood draws per day while maintaining accuracy and patient comfort.
  • Experience with specimen collection, labeling, and processing in accordance with established procedures.
  • Strong data entry skills and comfort working with computer-based patient information systems.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills, including clear communication and a patient-focused approach.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy when labeling, documenting, and handling specimens.
  • Ability to work effectively with a primarily adult patient population, including geriatric patients.
  • Eligibility to work as a phlebotomy technician or medical assistant with phlebotomy experience.
  • Minimum education of high school diploma or GED.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • More than 2 years of phlebotomy experience is highly desirable.
  • Experience using both straight needles and butterfly needles for blood collection.
  • Experience working with geriatric patients and diverse adult populations.
  • Bilingual communication skills are a plus and can enhance patient interactions.
  • Experience operating centrifuges and handling specimens that require splitting and freezing.
  • Comfort working in a high-volume environment with 30-50 patients per day.
  • Willingness to learn additional tasks such as accessioning and expanded lab support duties.

Work Environment

This role is based in a patient service center (PSC) located in Queens. You will work in an outpatient, clinic-style environment with a steady flow of patients, approximately 30-50 per day, with about 80% of the population being adults, including geriatric patients. The position is part-time at approximately 25 hours per week, with schedules such as Monday-Thursday and every Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., or Tuesday-Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., with opportunities to pick up additional hours as available.
