Job Description

This role focuses on obtaining high-quality blood samples from patients of all ages using a variety of phlebotomy methods while strictly following regulatory requirements and established collection procedures. The phlebotomist supports inpatient and emergency care by providing timely, accurate specimen collection and point-of-care testing, contributing directly to safe, efficient, and compassionate patient care.

Responsibilities

• Obtain quality blood samples using capillary, venous, assisted line, and arterial collection methods in accordance with established procedures and regulatory requirements.
• Provide rapid response to medical emergencies by performing timely phlebotomy and related support tasks.
• Work across multiple hospital campuses in general patient care areas, pediatrics, the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Units, and Operating Rooms as assigned.
• Ensure accurate patient identification prior to collection and maintain precise specimen labeling, handling, and transportation at all times.
• Perform accurate specimen testing using Point of Care (POC) equipment according to established protocols.
• Use a variety of computer programs and systems to document collections, manage orders, and support laboratory workflows.
• Maintain strict patient confidentiality and comply with all privacy and security policies.
• Deliver courteous, professional customer service when performing phlebotomy, answering phones, and interacting with patients, nurses, providers, and other healthcare professionals.
• Demonstrate a positive and professional demeanor in all interactions and settings.
• Work independently and as part of a team to meet departmental goals and patient care needs.
• Operate effectively in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple tasks while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
• Follow written and verbal instructions accurately and apply strong organizational, prioritization, problem-solving, critical-thinking, and decision-making skills.
• Push carts and walk significant distances within the hospital to reach various units and collection sites.
• Assist in training and orienting students and new employees in phlebotomy procedures, workflows, and safety practices.

Essential Skills

• Proficiency in phlebotomy techniques, including capillary, venous, assisted line, and arterial blood collection.
• Demonstrated experience in blood draws and medical laboratory testing.
• Ability to perform accurate specimen testing using Point of Care (POC) equipment.
• Ability to work effectively in inpatient and hospital settings.
• Strong computer literacy and comfort working with multiple computer programs and systems.
• Ability to maintain strict patient confidentiality and follow all privacy regulations.
• Strong customer service skills, including clear communication and professional interaction with patients and healthcare staff.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with multiple team members.
• Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced environment while maintaining attention to detail.
• Demonstrated skills in understanding and following written and verbal instructions, organization, prioritization, problem solving, critical thinking, and decision making.
• Physical ability to push carts and walk long distances within a hospital setting.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Phlebotomist or MLT/MT/CLS degreed candidate with phlebotomy experience.
• Certification as an MLT, MT, or Phlebotomist (for example, NHA, ASCP, or equivalent).
• Completion of a phlebotomy training program that includes a clinical rotation, or at least 3 months of phlebotomy experience.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Inpatient or hospital experience preferred.
• Customer service experience preferred.
• Interest in long-term career growth within a large, nationally recognized hospital system.
• Willingness to work across multiple hospital campuses and diverse care areas, including pediatrics, emergency, intensive care, and operating rooms.
• Comfort assisting with training and mentoring students and new team members.

Work Environment

This position is based within hospital laboratory services and supports multiple inpatient care areas, including general units, pediatrics, the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Units, and Operating Rooms. The role involves working on-site across two hospital campuses and requires frequent walking and cart pushing throughout the facilities. The environment is fast-paced and patient-focused, with regular interaction with nurses, providers, and other healthcare professionals. The position is structured as a 3-month open-ended contract with a strong intention to extend multiple times and potentially transition to a permanent role for high-performing team members. There are six openings: two positions with Monday-Friday schedules from 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. with an every-other-weekend rotation, and four positions with Monday-Friday schedules from 10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. with an every-other-weekend rotation. The hospital uses standard laboratory and point-of-care equipment along with multiple computer systems to manage orders, documentation, and results. This is a Contract position based out of Rochester, MN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $28.00/hr.
