Responsibilities:

In this role the Phlebotomist Lead will perform the following job duties:

  • Reports directly to the laboratory Support Supervisor assigned to the phlebotomy section.
  • Perform venipuncture, heel puncture and finger puncture according to established procedures.
  • Able to instruct patients correctly for collection of non blood specimens (urines, 24 hour urines, occult blood etc)
  • Accession specimens into the computer system.
  • Process specimens in the centrifugation area for distribution to the testing area or for proper storage.
  • Maintains standard precautions at all times.
  • Transports specimens to the laboratory as needed.
  • Provides excellent customer service.
  • May be required to work from various locations (Pavilion, North Campus, or Emerson) or float between various lab departments, as needed based on department needs and within scope of practice.

Schedule

FTE: 1.0

Shift Hours: 6:30am-3:00pm

Days of Week: Monday- Friday

Qualifications:

Education

Required: High School Diploma or GED

Preferred: Certification from a medical assistant program, military medical or laboratory assistant program

Necessary Skills:

  • Knowledge of venipunture and skin puncture procedures.
  • Ability to professionally and courteously interact with patients, visitors, co-workers and external laboratory customers.
  • Knowledge of basic computer data entry.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and organize workload.
  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques in specimen handling and processing.
  • Must be able to handle stressful situations in a professional manner.
  • Must be detail oriented.

Experience:

Required: Minimum two (2) years clinical or hospital experience

Preferred: Phlebotomy experience in a hospital inpatient setting with all age groups, specimens processing, experience using a laboratory information system for accessioning and specimen tracking.

Age of Patients Served: All Age Groups.
