Job Summary and Qualifications

As a phlebotomist, you are under close supervision. The Phlebotomist I perform skillful phlebotomy on the correct patient, utilizing knowledge of age-related factors, specimen requirements, specimen volume, aseptic technique and universal precautions. 

What you should expect to do in this role:

  • You will obtain blood of sufficient quantity and quality from adult and pediatric patients utilizing proper phlebotomy and identification techniques including venipuncture, heel, toe or finger sticks
  • You will process specimens brought to the laboratory and delivers the specimens to the correct section for testing; utilizes the laboratory computer system to process and track specimens to ensure efficient pre-analytic specimen processing
  • You will obtain cultures for Microbiology and Virology, using aseptic technique and a knowledge of anatomy to select the proper site and obtain accurate results
  • You will utilize universal precautions and knowledge of more restrictive isolation procedures when procuring, transporting and processing specimens to ensure patient and employee safety
  • You will participate in the improvement of operational functions of the department
  • You will utilize good customer relations and communications skills in performing phlebotomy, answering the phone and interacting with patient, their families, department members, and hospital staff to ensure high customer satisfaction
  • You will properly be handling and processing hazardous chemicals and waste as needed

What qualification you will need for this role:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, as required by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA)  
  • Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) from the ASCP Board of Certification is preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and utilize good customer relations skills
