Job Title: Phlebotomist

Job Description

This Phlebotomist role focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collections for patients of all ages in a fast-paced laboratory setting. The position involves accurately labeling, processing, and storing specimens, maintaining detailed records, and ensuring all procedures comply with established protocols and safety regulations. You will provide clear and courteous explanations to patients, support laboratory operations through careful specimen handling, and use basic computer applications to update patient information and maintain documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Perform venipuncture and other blood draws on patients across the age spectrum, from pediatric to geriatric.
  • Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.
  • Explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify that all information is accurate and complete.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts or orders to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Centrifuge specimens and prepare them for further processing or analysis as needed.
  • Package specimens securely and appropriately for transport, following specific protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Store specimen samples at the required temperatures and place them in the appropriate collection containers or tubes, ensuring accurate labeling.
  • Follow all procedures and protocols related to specimen handling and transport to preserve sample quality.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation related to specimen collection, processing, and patient information.
  • Update patient information in the system and ensure data is complete and current.
  • Answer telephone calls, respond to inquiries, and read laboratory results to callers when appropriate and authorized.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with general specimen processing, including handling, organizing, and preparing samples for testing.

Essential Skills

  • Phlebotomy experience with 0-2+ years performing venipunctures.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.
  • Phlebotomy certification.
  • Washington State Phlebotomy License.
  • Proficiency in blood draws, specimen collection, and specimen processing.
  • Ability to draw blood from patients of all ages, including pediatric and geriatric populations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Ability to accurately label, handle, and process specimens according to test orders and protocols.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations related to laboratory safety and specimen handling.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working with hard stick patients is preferred.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in matching requisitions, labeling specimens, and maintaining records.
  • Effective communication skills to clearly and courteously explain procedures to patients.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
  • Comfort handling multiple draws per patient and managing a high volume of specimens.

Work Environment

The role is based in a fast-paced laboratory setting focused on high-volume phlebotomy and specimen processing. You will perform blood draws on patients of all ages, from pediatric to geriatric, with an average of approximately 25 draws per patient. The environment involves frequent use of centrifuges, specimen containers, and computer systems, including Microsoft Office Suite, for documentation and patient information updates. You will work with a variety of specimen types and follow strict protocols for temperature-controlled storage, labeling, and transport to maintain specimen integrity. Safety and regulatory compliance, including adherence to OSHA and DEP standards, are integral to the daily work. Dress and attire are expected to be professional and appropriate for a clinical laboratory environment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Yakima, WA.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $19.00/hr.
