Rate of Pay:

This is a Full-Time Support Staff position at grade 14, with an annual salary range of $54,932 to $72,243. The salary offer will be based on education and experience, in alignment with the Colleges compensation philosophy and the current Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), if applicable.

Job Summary:

This role captures, edits, and produces high-quality photography to support the brand and goals of Elgin Community College. The position serves as the primary photographer for the institution and collaborates with departments across campus to support the website, communications, social media, enrollment, institutional publications, convocations, and events. Responsibilities include photography for major publications such as Impact magazine and the annual Report to the Community, providing technical direction during photoshoots, and assisting with planning alongside marketing representatives and department leaders. The role works closely with Marketing and Communications, creative services staff, and stakeholders across the college, producing a high volume of imagery essential for daily communications.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Bachelors degree in photography, multimedia, photojournalism, journalism, or a related field

  2. At least five years of experience in digital photography and/or videography

  3. A photography portfolio demonstrating skills in lighting, composition, color, visual quality, and both pre- and post-production workflows

  4. Advanced skills in capturing, editing, and adjusting photos; ability to work with video and audio as needed

  5. Strong knowledge of lighting techniques and camera equipment, including proper use and maintenance; basic knowledge of audio equipment

  6. Working knowledge of graphic design and experience collaborating with creative professionals such as designers, videographers, and web teams

  7. Understanding of delivering timely, newsworthy photography to the communications team to support press releases, media outreach, and institutional storytelling

  8. Ability to apply creative thinking and problem-solving in a professional setting

  9. Strong collaboration skills, including patience, flexibility, and teamwork

  10. Experience with project planning and strong organizational skills

  11. Ability to meet tight deadlines while maintaining quality

  12. Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills with people at all levels of the college

  13. Ability to work independently and manage multiple assignments

  14. Proven ability to consistently produce high-quality, creative images

  15. Flexibility to adjust work schedule, with advance notice, for campus events

  16. Ability to travel occasionally for off-site photoshoots

Desired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  1. Membership in a college photography association is encouraged

  2. FAA Part 107 drone certification is preferred

Essential Duties:

  1. Photo Direction: Work as part of the creative, communications, and marketing teams to plan and execute photography that supports marketing campaigns, publications, and college priorities. Use professional judgment and technical skills to select appropriate equipment, lighting, angles, props, and backgrounds to produce high-quality images that meet college brand standards.

  2. Coordinate, Plan, and Execute Photography: Schedule, coordinate, and produce professional photography for the website, social media, publications, enrollment materials, advertising, convocations, and other promotional needs. Advise faculty, staff, and administrators on photography and video requests. Provide best practice recommendations to the Sr. Director of Content and Creative Services and the Director of Communications. Remain adaptable to changing schedules, lighting conditions, and weekly opportunities to capture campus life.

  3. Composition and Editing: Edit, process, and prepare photos for use across web, communications, marketing, social media, and external media. Editing includes cropping, color correction, and embedding metadata. Name, tag, and upload images to the colleges digital asset management system and on campus servers to ensure accurate organization and searchability.

  4. Imaging and Multimedia Support: Support the Sr. Director of Content and Creative Services with photography recommendations and assist the Multimedia and Creative Services Coordinator with audio and video needs. Collaborate with senior graphic designers, videographers, and web and communications teams to provide photography for campaigns, creative assets, media relations, and digital platforms.

  5. Asset Archiving: Maintain and organize the colleges digital archives by uploading photos to the college server and the cloud-based digital asset management system tagging photos with the correct keywords and metadata.
