Legal Prep is seeking an energetic, relationship-driven Physical Education Teacher & Coach to join our founding faculty. This position is designed for an educator who believes athletics and physical wellness are powerful tools for developing discipline, teamwork, perseverance, leadership, and character.
The Physical Education Teacher will teach physical education courses to both 6th and 9th grade students while serving as one of the leaders of Legal Preps athletic program. Because coaching is an essential component of this position, the teacher will teach a reduced course load during the school day and will be expected to coach one or two athletic teams each season, depending on the practice and competition schedule.
The ideal candidate is passionate about helping students grow both academically and athletically and understands that extracurricular activities are an extension of the classroom.
Responsibilities
Physical Education Instruction
- Teach physical education courses to students in grades 6 and 9.
- Develop engaging lessons that promote lifelong health, physical fitness, teamwork, sportsmanship, and personal wellness.
- Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of students with varying abilities and fitness levels.
- Assess student progress and maintain accurate records.
- Promote healthy lifestyles and positive decision-making.
Athletic Coaching
- Serve as head coach or assistant coach for one or two athletic teams each season, depending on school needs and the athletic schedule.
- Plan and conduct practices that emphasize skill development, teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship.
- Supervise student-athletes during practices, competitions, and team activities.
- Foster a positive, inclusive, and competitive athletic culture aligned with Legal Preps mission and values.
- Communicate regularly with families regarding team expectations and student progress.
- Support student eligibility by encouraging academic success and positive behavior.
Advisory & Student Support
- Serve as an advisory teacher for a cohort of students.
- Build meaningful relationships with students and families.
- Support students academic, social-emotional, and personal development.
- Reinforce Legal Preps restorative practices and culture of high expectations.
Founding Team Responsibilities
- Assist with student recruitment and family engagement events.
- Participate in professional development, staff meetings, and collaborative planning.
- Support school-wide events and extracurricular activities.
- Demonstrate flexibility and contribute wherever needed as part of a founding faculty team.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelors degree required.
- Valid Indiana teaching license (or ability to obtain one prior to the start of employment).
- Demonstrated experience coaching youth or school athletics.
- Strong classroom management and relationship-building skills.
- Commitment to serving students from historically underserved communities.
- Ability to create a structured, positive, and engaging learning environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience teaching middle school and/or high school physical education.
- Experience coaching multiple sports.
- CPR, First Aid, and/or coaching certifications.
- Experience developing athletic programs or extracurricular activities.
